Hello Tobymax35 ,

Mine was recent but I have had a total shoulder replacement , it was done over 15 years ago , and still good with no problems . So they can last well .

I have a lot more movement with that joint than I had before the operation .

I hope you can come to a decision that your happy with .

Best wishes Cherie

Hello, I had a reverse shoulder replacement in July 2019. Honestly, it’s the best thing I could have done. I was really struggling with movement and pain. Obviously after the operation you would have to wear a sling and be very limited in movement of your shoulder but after a relatively short time and after a few physio sessions my shoulder is great. I don’t have the nagging pain or the sharp pain when moving it. I would say it’s well worth doing.

I can honestly say that I had been struggling for a long time, years in fact and my op has stopped that. I don’t have full motion but almost. It’s the loss of nagging constant pain that’s the best thing. I think we are all different and we each have to choose what road to rake but I do wish you all the best either way.

hello, for the first few weeks I was very restricted in my movement. I was incredibly grateful to mu husband who assisted with showering etc although I did get some large wipes which allowed me to sometimes do what was needed by myself. Dressing was also a challenge but for a relatively short time, baggy clothes were a godsend. I bought a v-pillow (you can get them in Argos or Amazon relatively cheaply) but with other pillows under them so I was propped up. Honestly, as with every bit of this disease I found different ways to do things. Really happy to help if I can.

I’m glad you’ve got your name on the list. My husband had never cooked until just before I went into hospital but I was amazed at just how well he did, they sometimes surprise you! Please remember if you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask I’ll be happy to help if I can.

personally I would get my name on the list, as waiting times are long anyway. There is no pressure to proceed if it’s not what you want when the time comes. I worked as an orthopaedic nurse for over 30yrs, and have seen great outcomes following replacement, as long as you put in the hard physio that comes with it. They tend to last much longer than hip & knee replacements, so would be unlikely it would need replacing in the future.

It may also be possible to speak to someone who has had shoulder replacement surgery through our volunteer "Here for you" service. If we cannot find someone who has had this surgery, we should be able to match with someone who has had a form of surgery at the very least. I should also mention that due to staff shortages at present, organising these calls is taking longer than usual. Find out more about the service with the link below.
