Mtx and sulphra

Hi all,

Hope everyone is well! I also just want to say how great this forum has been in providing information since my partner was diagnosed with RA. I think we all experience the lack of answers from doctors and Rheumys.

We have a question. My partner is starting methotraxate, was on sulphra and the rheumy and doc both say to take together but not if they should be taken the same day ie metho one day and sulphra 6 tabs everyday (2 tabs 3 times a day). My partner hasnt taken metho before and we have read online that it can react with sulphra so wanted to ask if any of you lovely ppl have been prescribed both and how to take these ie taken both together and if you took all tabs same day or skipped sulphra the day you took metho?

Honestly no idea what we would do without this forum and thank you in advance for any advice/your experience.

I take my Sulphasalzine (and Hydroxychloroquin) every day and inject Methotrexate once a week. Hopefully someone on Methotrexate tablets will be along to advise on the timings; when I started on Methotrexate and Hydroxychloroquin I used to take the Hydroxy in the morning with breakfast and the Methotrexate in the evening with tea but when I started Sulphasalzine I was already injecting Methotrexate. I take my morning Sulphasalzine at the same time as Hydroxy.

I think your rheumy and doctor would have told you if you mustn’t take it on the same day as they know you’re on both and I would think it would say on the label to not take it on the same day ( like it does for folic acid) but check with them if you need reassurance.

I’ve been on sulfasalazine for 9 years and started on methotrexate tablets about a month ago. I’ve been taking both together.

I take both Sulfasalazine and Methotrexate. I normally take my Sulfasalazine (5 tablets for me every day) in two sittings, once after breakfast (3 tablets) and the other two at lunch, and then I take MTX after dinner (once a week). The nurse said to me that you can either take the Sulfasalazine in one go or break it down into a few sittings if you like. My neighbour also has RA, and he takes 6 Sulfasalazine in three sitting of two tablets.

This is so helpful, thank you! We werent sure if he could continue to take his standard sulfra tablets as normal with the mtx. Thank you!
