knee surgery
Good morning I have had 3 knr and although you do have to ewalk with a crutch for a while you do eventually walk without and i do not limp. Good luck remember the physio therapy is of paramount importance
I worked as a nurse & ward sister on an orthopaedic ward for 34yrs. The answer really lies in how you participate with physio after surgery. The focus is on getting your knee straight in the early days. So work on strengthening your quadricep muscles, we encouraged patients to start doing them prior to surgery then you will have stronger muscles to start recovery with. It’s also important not to be tempted to put pillows or rolled up towels under the knee, except for where they are needed for exercise. It really is the case of the more you put in, the more you will get out of it. It tends to be the patients who only did the exercises when the physio came that achieved poor outcomes, compared to the patients who followed the instructions of doing their exercises every few hours. The result of not continuing exercises between visits often meant another operation to manipulate the knee and free any adhesions from the lack of exercising. I’m sure you will be motivated and do well. You should be able to take advantage of the summer weather. We usually recommend walking little and often rather that one long walk, then being inactive the rest of the day. Good luck with your surgery 🤗
Many thanks for all your useful advise,i will do as much physio as i can.
Good luck with your knee replacement.I have had both knees replaced ten years ago and did not have a limp.My second knee was not as good as first.I developed baker's cyst behind knee about eight weeks into physio. My physio attached ankle weights to straighten my leg.I will never know if it caused cyst or if it would have happened anyway.I was held back with this problem. Please do all your exercises it is sore to start but it does get easier.I am currently three weeks post hip replacement doing exercises. My other hip was replaced seven months ago and is great.Best Wishes.
Thank you for your reply, how long do you have to have physio for.
I think first time round it was about ten weeks with knees.Hips seen physio for about six weeks at home.I am still doing them myself will keep going need to strengthen muscles been out of action not able to get about for a while. My RA is still not controlled tried many meds, hopefully next one will work. You will get there and it can make a big difference to your quality of life.
I had a left total knee replacement in August last year. Like others have said the exercises post surgery are the most important thing to get you back on track again. I religiously did them and still do some daily exercises now. My consultant said the exercises were more important than walking and so I didn’t walk great distance for about 3 months. I went back to work as a staff nurse in a busy outpatients part time at 9 weeks. I still had a bit of a limp at that time but my husband says my limp has 98% gone. I hope that helps. Good luck with your surgery.
