Am I reading things correctly in that there could be another national lockdown in France?

We were always a couple of weeks behind Italy etc...... I can’t bear the thought I’d shielding again!!

I read they reported 7,297 new cases in Friday.

Yup, cases are skyrocketing in certain areas of France. But the number of people in hospital is much more stable, and death rates also remain low. So it is different from in March. A lot of the areas affected are places (like the South of France) that were not badly hit early on so it’s more a continuation of first wave rather than a second wave.

It is extremely unlikely that there will be another national lockdown unless things get much, much worse. So far many cities have imposed obligatory mask wearing, like Paris and Marseille (and my local teeny, tiny town) and the laws are in place for local préfectures to impose local lockdowns. With the economy on its knees (tho’ not as badly as UK) I think the government would be hugely reluctant to impose anything nationally. As of this morning there are 346 clusters active.

But the next two weeks are critical as the holidays are over and people are back at work and school today. So everyone has their fingers crossed that this won’t cause another surge and people will start being sensible. Which they have not been over the holidays!

And tourists by and large have gone, or are going home. So that should help.

I'm due to come to France (Carnac, Brittany) on Sunday 6/9/20 and can't find any information on the covid rates. Would you be kind enough to share where you get your information from so that I can make a decision as to whether to continue or cancel my trip? It would be much appreciated. When I made the decision to continue with the trip last week it appeared to only really be Paris and Marseilles that were badly affected - looks like a lot has changed in 8 days! Thank you in advance.

I can’t work out how to send you the article I read but it was reported by BBC / Reuter’s on 28 August.

My advice would be to check the government websites re travel and to follow all guidelines, which I’m sure you will.

It’s always a tough decision, going away anywhere right now and it had to be a personal decision. As long as you’re fully aware of current risk, I’m sure all will be well. X

Thanks for that Eiram. I've been checking the government websites. Was just looking for some local to the area info. I shall go and just have a very quiet time. I desperately need a change of scenery.

I don’t know what UK gov’t is saying, so you need to keep and eye in that and follow advice.

However, Carnac is in the Morbihan department, and if you use this link and search for Morbihan you will get latest statistics for there. Basically stable, with

Hospitalisés : 18 (dont 1 new.) - in hospital

En réanimation : 1 (dont 0 new.) - in intensive care

Renvoyés à dom. : 439 (dont 0 new.) - sent home

Décès : 96 (dont 0 new.) - died

All markets and some towns are requiring masks, but not as far as I can see Carnac itself. Carnac was one of the first places to have an outbreak in March, but seems to have been fairly stable since then. Although who knows what will have happened in last days and weeks.

And this final link on the second page gives info that suggest rate in the morbihan is relatively low, and there is only one active cluster which is a family group.

Thanks for that HH. I keep checking the government's website and am signed up for updates by the Foreign Office, but couldn't find anything as detailed as your links.

My earlier breaks to France in April and June were cancelled and it really has been the thought of this one that has kept me going through five months of sat at home, shielding. It'll be a very quiet break due to the circumstances. Eleven nights of looking at a different four walls sounds like heaven at the moment!

Quite honestly if you are careful on the journey then being out and about here is no different from being in the UK - or perhaps a bit better as less crowded. Same virus!

I'm of the same opinion. I live on the Kent coast, three miles from the Eurotunnel, so can see France from my house. We are a holiday area for Londoners, so will be nice to escape for a while. My son returned from ice climbing in Chamonix a few weeks ago and says he felt things were being taken far more seriously in France than they are here. He thinks I'll be safe as long as I'm as careful as I am here. It's not me; it's the others!

I've spent so many holidays in Carnac I can't remember exactly how many but in excess of 17 !The standing stones and the beaches especially Quiberon are lovely. So whatever you decide to do enjoy yourself. We used to stay just outside and cycle to the beach Les Soules it was super. Only problem was eating too much. If you've not been before make sure you visit Cote Savage and the big church at Vanes where the Citadel is. And La Trinite for wonderful food.

That won't make much difference to me i am afraid as that is my normal. Yes i have enjoyed the times i have managed to get out, but i haven't craved to go out every day. xxx

We are very unlikely to go into another national lockdown. The country can't afford it.

The movement of people seems to have caused the virus to spread, but it seems mostly younger people are being infected and they are largely not requiring hospitalisation and are recovering well.

The coming few months will be telling. People return to work and school. Then look out for January. We may do ok.

It staggers me that so many feel that wearing a mask means they can forget social distancing!

Caution all the way for me, but with smatterings of normality. I could not completely shield again either!

My sister lives in France and she says that Macron doesn’t want a total lockdown, and is hoping that with their schools going back today there’ll be less movement around the country and the infection rate will drop.

I think a lot of the situation in France could well be caused by the invasion of tourists in the South of the country. I have a friend who lives in Nice & she says there are equally as many holiday makers as usual......possibly from countries with a high CV19 count?

I don’t think shielding as we had before will be re-introduced in the UK.....it will just be the same old, same old advice to take care...wash your hands, keep your distance & wear a mask.

Of course from yesterday’s experience of idiots causing so much trouble ...it will be up to us all, to use our common sense & ensure we look after ourselves.......but not by locking ourselves away thinking that is safer......this indecision is going to be around for many months.....so we must sensibly decide for ourselves how to remain safe.

Unfortunately its the youngsters that have caused the virus to spread again. Here in greece most people have been careful to distance even on the beach but the youngsters still behave as normal because they think the virus wont affect them. Hopefully now tourist season is over and kids back to school next week our virus cases will drop. Pre summer we had less than 3000 cases now its over 10000.

I hope not too we've come so far. I worry more heaven forbid with dark nights and Winter months if people would cope with a second wave. So let's keep hoping and trying our best to keep safe and well. x

We have a spike in Norfolk at the moment and everyone in Norfolk Suffolk Essex are expecting to be told that lockdown is back. Schools reopened today and my neighbours children are desperate to return. We are living in a weird situation. I hope you can enjoy your break and post a picture to cheer us up. ✈️
