Failed injection:-(

Hi I have just started injecting Benepali after 5 years with RA. I seem to not be great at injecting and today despite counting to 15 after the second click I found that when I removed the injection pen, quite a bit of the medication had not gone into my body and I had to wipe it away. I think possibly the shock of the pain may have caused me to stop pressing so hard into my thigh.

I am now concerned that I only got a teeny dose. Should I inject a second time or just wait a week?

Has anyone experienced this please?

Thanks

Did a nurse show you how to inject to start with, to make sure you have the technique right? If this happens again you can always ask to be shown again.

But don’t inject again, under-dosing is better than over-dosing. Depending on the dose your pen will be 4 or 5ml of liquid. If you dribble a full teaspoon of liquid onto your kitchen worktop, and that will be approx the full dose - it’s quite a lot isn’t it? So you you can estimate the amount on your thigh, and probably find you may just have lost 0.5ml or so?

I often have a couple of drops bubble back out, but just wipe it away.

I occasionally get a little blob come out ( but much less frequently now I have been injecting for over 2 years now). I do still find it best to sit still for a few minutes after as I find any immediate movement seems to draw it out a bit. I also try not to apply a cotton wool ball to any leakage too quickly ( meds or blood) as I noticed any form of touching area seemed to draw more out. Next week, be positive and I would suggest “ just getting on with it”. I always mutter to myself thank goodness it’s only weekly! Best of luck.

Don't re inject you could overdose. I am a nurse but I found them difficult and painful injections to do. I have found the best place is my thigh one third up outer area if you stretch the skin wide with the hand you are not injecting with i have found it a bit less painful hope this works for you

HI Jessica, I got better with practice. I inject into my stomach but alternate these areas every week, I have a lot of stomach to alternate. I found it painful initially, the colder the solution the more it seems to sting so I make sure I leave mine out before injecting. I often put the pen next to my skin to warm up (down my bra) while I'm getting ready for work probably not recommended but it works well for me and it seems to sting less. The Benepali has worked so well for me that it has been worth all the stinging and false starts. It gave me my life back.

Hi. I just started benepali two weeks ago and first time i released pressure luckily nurse put hand on top to make sure fluid went in. It hurts less if taken out of fridge hours before use. Also try a numbing cream from pharmact. That will help x
