Severe knee pain

I’ve been on methotrexate since May 2017 plus sulphasalazine and hydroxychloroquine added in September without success so I started Benepali 5weeks ago. Feel I’ve been improving but today I have severe pain in my knee...so bad my knee gives way if I put weight on it!! Anyone experienced this! Grateful for any help 🤞

Yes I have. Sympathies.

It happened rather a lot when I still had considerable inflammation. It's a bit better now but my knees are still quite weak. I've been given exercises to strengthen it.

Have you had any recent xrays? Might be good to get it checked. Also possible to get osteoarthritis and other types of knee problems.

Thanks for your reply. I haven’t had recent X-ray so will ask GP to arrange one. I do suffer from osteoarthritis especially in my hands and had hip replacement 3years ago so guess it could be the cause. It’s just the suddenness of it.

For some reason I get really bad knee pain when I go to bed. Told doc can’t explain why ???

Knees that give way do seem to be a classic osteoarthritis sign, often from bits of debris cluttering up the joint. And it can come on overnight as the debris suddenly floats into a position that jams up the joint. So if your knee doesn't feel swollen, hot or full of fluid then it could be that. But best to get it checked out.....

Thanks helixhelix. That could be what’s causing pain. Will get it checked out and post how it goes. Appreciate your help 👍

I like that insight Helix. Perhaps the damaged area and as you say debris is causing the pain, especially as this is solely confined to in my case the damaged foot. Back Drs to take this up. They have only recommended physio!

Forgot to mention. I had a meniscus tear about ten years ago, that causes terrible pain and the knee to give way.

Have you done anything to cause a tear?

Thanks Nettac. Can’t think of anything I’ve done to cause a tear. Appreciate your help. 👍

Definitely ask for expert advice maybe an X-ray. I had terrible erosion of my knees and then two knee replacements which have worked very well to date.

I suffered for a long time. Got help from a great physio to strengthen muscles prior to knee replacements. I wish I’d had them done earlier. But your knees are probably different. I hope you get some relief soon

Hi - similar story. Been on the Benepali solo since January 18. It started positive but now experience the discomfort just in my right foot. That’s the only area where it has always been the real focus. I have been in discomfort for 5 days! But am avoiding having to take mtx too! As i just did not get on with it. It is bearable to walk but find when I am sitting to get up to walk it’s achey! I am now thinking of perhaps alternative pain treatment for that area such as acupuncture or I have heard of cupping. Hope you are not in too much pain, hot Epsom’s baths, light stretching if you can so not to stiffen and relaxing does help, and eat all the good stuff too. Best wishes Hessie

I am in similar state. Methotrexate since may 2017 hydroxy chloroquine and sulfasalazine with no success. Now on baricitinib since end December. Thought it was working but now have flare but knees and feet worse specially at night. Waiting for rheumatology review and hoping for some answers.
