Moving house and hospital

I am thinking of moving from Birmingham to a more rural area for the benefit of my asthma and bronchiecstasis. One of the things that makes me hesitate is having to chang hospitals because all my consultants are really caring and done their best for me over the 12 years.

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of the Royal Victoria Hospital. I would need to see people in the lung and RA departments.

Somewhere along the Fylde coast in Lancashire, north of Blackpool. My mum lives in south Cumbria and isn't in brilliant health. I end up driving up the M6 at least once a month, which is difficult when I'm having a bad time joint and breathing are really bad. It's a journey of 3-4 hours from Birmingham and about an hour from where we're hoping to move from.

Hi Helen. I reckon that if you can afford the time and energy to move you should do it sooner rather than later given your health and your Mum's. However, you should also think of how much you might miss your friends, familiar surroundings and how easy it is to get what you want without a major trek being involved. We moved to a small village but it's 10-12 miles to a large-ish town and, believe me, there is more culture in a pot of yoghurt than here. Just saying. Wishing you the best. Hugs

I have been thinking about it for some time and it isn't something I'm doing lightly. We definitely aren't looking for rural, but more edge of small town. We go to concerts or the theatre about three times a year, but not always in Birmingham so that wouldn't be a problem. We will be further away from our daughter, one son and our granddaughter and I will miss them, but when we saw our son on Saturday he was checking that we were buying a house that would be big enough for them all to stay! I think, after over 30 years of putting work and family first, I need to move, even if only for a few years.

I never meant to imply you hadn't thought it through and I'm sorry if you got that impression. Problem is I've had far too many house moves and it's made me very wary and cynical. I wish you all the very best. Hugs

Sorry, I didn't think you thought I was moving without much thought. It's something I've been thinking about for the last three years! There are as many pros as there are cons, one of which is that we've lived in our house for over 30 years - it is a big old Victorian terrace and if I could move the house I would do. I just have a need within me to move north and nearer the sea. It's very difficult to explain, but I honestly didn't think you were in any way suggesting I was taking moving lightly.

I wish you cleaner air and courage. I guess trainlines and bus routes need to be considered, too, in case driving causes problems, or you can't transfer to an automatic car [which saved me!.]

We have considered transport, and also the proximity of local shops. Our hope is to live on the edge of a small town on or near the coast. I'm determined it's going to happen because I've lived on the edge of a city for nearly 40 years, and I'm really a small town, northern girl at heart.
