Hi everyone I was wondering if there is an alternative treatment other than a colonoscopy I had one 12 months ago everything was ok except for some inflammation ulcerative colitis) I did not like the pre preparation for the colonoscopy as not being very mobile I can not afford to keep going to the toilet

Sorry Rocky colonoscopy is a investigation not a treatment. As you say the preparation is worse the the actual investigation. I've had two the result was divaticulitis.

Was it explained why you need another colonoscopy so soon? 12 months doesn't seem much of a gap. And are you getting treatment for the colitis?

Anyway, there are alternative investigations to look at your colon - but they all require the same preparation as your colon needs to be clean. You could talk to your doctor about whether there's a easier way for you to do the preparation, so more days on the low residue diet and liquid food and a shorter purging period perhaps? I had one 10 days ago, and agree that the preparation is a nuisance - but it doesn't last that long.

Wish there was as I am dreading my next one to remove polups. I agree prep is terrible.I have to go in hospital before and stay til well.No private room either.

It's the sedation that scares me as it does not sedate or stop pain with me

I had entenox (gas&oxygen) for the procedure as the injection of relaxing agent Medazolan or what it's called doesn't Work until 4 hours later.

Info says that the pill camera needs more preparation, not less? So probably painless as a procedure, but doesn't avoid the purging needed for colonoscopy.

I too have found that the preparation is the worst bit - but it has to be done, or the view of the colon is obstructed by food waste. It means setting aside the day before to stay next to the toilet and put up with the awful cramps - but that's just something that has to be done.

Have you tried Ayurveda? Have u heard of John Doulard Spa. I have been following his blogs for quite sometime and am convinced that he can troubleshoot your problem and prescribe the most natural treatment. I suggest you give him a try before any other treatments.

I too had strange problems but managed to get them fixed by eliminating some problem causing foods specially gluten and dairy.

Here is the link to Dr. John.

I had a virtual one, a weird diet for 3 days and done by scan. No trips to the loo or invasive procedure easy peasy and discomfort free.

That's great! I was told virtual was no different in prep - but I know which one I'll opt for next time...

It was done on the NHS but in a private hospital. It was rather than the camera down and then another up the consultant said. No pain at all and took about 20 minutes.

Interesting reading, I have to go for colonoscopy and endoscopy in One month . Hate the thought of the preparation as already have severe stomach cramps hence the test. If will totally wipe me out doing this the day before. Can anybody tell me there experience of endoscopy, re throat numbing spray or general anasthetic ?

Hi Shazzy/All, I've had the endoscopy and colonoscopy together one time when I was particularly unwell. I had anaesthetic spray in my throat and then presumably heavy sedative via IV as apart from a recollection of being turned over at some point was aware of nothing else. There was no pain or "discomfort" and after a cup of tea I went home (accompanied) about an hour afterwards. I hope yours goes as well.

Thank you very much for replying Entero that is reassuring, am rather scared of this procedure.

Hi Rocky, if you have ulcerative colitis then do they need to look at the whole bowel? Might you ask for a sigmoidoscopy which can be done following an enema?
