Metoject on aeroplane

Good morning, I am going on holiday and have read I have to carry my metoject in my hand luggage and that I will have to produce a letter explaining it. Can anyone advise me on who I ask for the letter rhummy/GP? Did you have to notify the airline before traveling that you would be taking metoject onboard?

I THINK your doctors letter will suffice, but i would check with your airline before you go as some airlines might have different parameters.xxxx

Thanks Sylvi, I will speak to my GP. I wonder how I would dispose of the used pen? Do I bring it home? I have a sharps box at home!

Ask about getting a smaller box to take with you and take lots of advice or how about taking your needle to your local drs or hospital where your staying to dispose of it even the pharmacy i am sure could take it. Again check before you go and when you get there.xxxxx

Where do you get your metoject from?  If it's healthcare at Home then they'll give you a letter.  Otherwise either GP or Rheumy - whichever's easier to deal with.

I've never bothered to tell the airline, but do just look at their advice on line so you know what it says. And as for disposing of the syringe, I've never had any luck in getting a local pharmacy to take them.  So I just bring them home again, which is a bit of a pain when I'm away for 2 months at a time but easier in the long run.

Hi

I travelled to Cyprus 2 years ago.I carried 2 mtx  jabs in their boxes in my handbag, along with all my other meds.

I had a letter from my GP (as he was easier to access than my rheum ) and I also took a copy of my prescription for my meds and the letter from Health  at Home confirming they were the suppliers of the meds.

Before I put my handbag through the X-ray machine I mentioned to the attendant that I had medication in there and was ready to produce evidence if required but no one asked for it.Obviously by the time we were on the return flight the jabs had been used so there was no issue.I brought the empty pens home with me in my suitcase.

Don't know if checking was just a bit lax that day or whether they perhaps do random checks, but it would be prudent to obtain some sort of paperwork just in case you are asked as you wouldn't want to have an issue with your meds when you get to the airport.I hadn't been required to inform the airline beforehand.

If you are in any doubt it would be worth checking with your travel agent or the airline just in case the rules have changed in the last 2 years.

Hope you enjoy your holiday.

I'm going away in a week and a half, so have been flapping about this. You do need to carry in hand luggage as it gets too cold in the hold. You do need a letter from rheum or rheum nurse. I also collect mine from the hospital pharmacy. I've heard that the MTX cannot go in the X-Ray machine but rheum nurse reassured me that it's not an issue. It's fine if they want to X-Ray it.

Have a lovely holiday. Where are you off to? :)

Hi Wilton T

If it's of any help my wife is type 1 Diabetic & carries an insuline pen we have not been long back from Malta. I contacted the Airline (airmalta) before we went they were very good & amended her Boarding pass information so we had no problems at the Airport at check in. Hope all goes well for you too.

Thanks for that, I've looked up the airline info and it says to bring a letter and notify the steward/stewardess on the flight x

Hi - I have been travelling for nearly 10 years - originally with mtx injections and now with Metoject. I carry a letter which doesn't state destination or dates so have used the same one for some time. Hospital gave me a travel sharps box although on cruises you can request a sharps box from the cruise line. I have never been asked about them at security although at Stansted on one occasion the jobs worth made a real fuss about my plastic bag which contained hand sanitizer not sealing right to the end and made me pay £2 for one of their bags. On another occasion we were at Beijing airport and. I was marched off to a separate room and they confiscated the refill for my gas hair tongs - but didn't mention the injections!

I find the best way is to just walk through ( although these days I get pushed through in a wheel chair). The time to explain is if they ask.

Am currently on holiday in Madeira so it will be s***s law if having said all this I get stopped on the way home.
