Hi,I have been on Metoject now for 3 weeks and have some burns on my legs from the injection. Does anyone else suffer from this or am I doing something wrong? Will this scar? are these burns dangerous?
Thanks
Amy

After the contents of the injection have emptied, are you leaving the injection in situ for a few seconds, then remove it slowly and press on the injection site for a few seconds with the alcohol swab?. I do it this way and I've never had a burn.
I've never had one but I think you should probably contact your nurse practitioner/doctor/whoever to just make sure it's OK!
Hi, Are you doing your injection into the upper thigh? I was shown at the clinic how to administer it into the fatty areas of the stomach, either side of the naval. This is simple and painless and usually leaves no mark other than a small dot or the occasional bruise if I'm clumsy. I was told the leg site is far more painful, being tight skin and more muscle.
Best to check back with your practitioner though because you may be getting an allergic reaction to the drug itself, and if not get them to show you the tummy area instead.
Hi there, I have been injecting now for 9 weeks with no problems. Sounds like you're maybe not leaving the needle in long enough, do you keep it in for fully 5 seconds and when you start your injection have you made sure that the protective collar is all the way back? Like Kariss I find the tummy the best place to inject - plenty fat there on me!
Good luck1

When I used a metoject there was a burning sensation as it went in (extremely painful) and then I would get a red reaction. After speaking to nurse found out that it was the preservative in the injection that caused the burning feeling and the redness was a site reaction, again in this case it was the preservative which caused it. I know this because I stayed on the same drug in vial form with a 'proper' needle so no preservative, no burning and no site reaction. You need really to talk to your team. Sometimes the site reactions get worse, for some they go away but they will advise you on your best course of action.
I have been using Metoject for a couple of years or so and I have never experienced what you have described. A little leaking of the fluid on the first one or two uses and very occasionally a little blood comes out after use but generally it has been fine.
Just had a bruise on one leg count to twenty when injection is activated no problems
I've had the odd bruise and odd spot off blood but no redness , better to speak to your team as they will know best
I have found the best place to inject is the tummy, it's less painful. In the years I have been injecting have only bruised a couple of times. Was told not to inject to quickly after swabbing (as a tip just fan it with your hand you feel the change in temperature) and never rub or massage the site.
If you haven't already informed your Rheumy team do so, this should be reported & recorded, anything out of the ordinary should be particularly when new to an alternate method of taking a med. I've read of but not heard of this reaction before.... it could be an injection site reaction or a toxic reaction to the MTX or one of the additives I really don't know. Assuming you're injecting correctly (not the same area each week) & the dose is correct, it could be a bad batch even, whatever do inform either your Rheumy or your nurse. I've been injecting MTX 6 years only in my tum though, I found it hurt injecting my thigh & whilst I've hit a blood vessel before it's only bruised, normally I have no reaction, certainly not a burn.
Do let us know what they make of it, it's intriguing me not having come across it before in someone.
as well as what other folk have said, it is also possible to have an allergic reaction to the stuff that the pens are made of or to any rubbery type of cap over a needle, etc.
I was told if I get it on my skin it will burn. I inject into my thigh between the veins I can see to limit bruising. I grab a big lump of thigh and push the pen in then press the top and hold it for a few seconds before removing the pen and letting my flesh go. Not had a problem with the Methatrexate on my skin. Like has been said I think maybe you need to go though the process again or maybe it's just not liking your body and your reacting. Good luck and hope you get it sorted
Thank you for all your comments, I have an appointment on Tuesday morning to see how my new medication is going. It's really not working. I'm on prednisolene (7.5mg a day) Hydroxychloroquine and metoject. I'm nearly as bad as I was before I was diagnosed with RA and at the time popping ibruprofen like it was going out of fashion. I can't walk properly and it's affecting my knee, it's swollen and I'm worried I'm damaging it. I'm going to ask to be put on different medication as I can't handle being the way I am. I hate being the mum who can't do fun things I hate being tired, I hate this crap.
