most people seem to think that cold and damp makes R A worse, but I suffer more in the heat and that is when I can have a flare up. Anyone else have this?

Yep, I've always suffered in the heat even before I was diagnosed, the heat would always make my feet and ankles swell but also don't do well in wet weather! It's a shame as we so look forward to some warm weather too!

Hi I too feel I am worse during hot weather. I keep out of direct Sun but feel that my pain levels increase after hot days. Be interesting to see if anyone else comments.

Yes. I always suffer more in the summer, my feet and hands swell. I can't sleep because of the hot nights, even with the fan on, then I'm tired all day.

I flare in sunny weather. Luckily I live in Scotland......

Cold is definitely the enemy in terms of increased joint pain. Unfortunately I live in Scotland......

My best scenario is warm and overcast. I just need to find that place. :D

It's not the heat for me, it's humidity, that & damp. I love the sun but preferably with dry heat.

I find I really suffer in the lovely sunny weather. I remember being in hospital and the nurse taking my blood said how much better I must feel in this lovely weather, she looked puzzled when I told her I suffer In the heat, she then said again, yes but it makes u feel better a bit of sunshine, to which I just ende up saying yes!

I have ankylosing spondylitis, but I definitely suffer more with the heat. might also be something to do with my rosacea flaring in the sun too, but I do find I am better off living in Scotland than when I was living in a much warmer climate where summer temperatures got to low 30's.

Yes, I quite agree. I'm always worse in the heat than the cold and most people without RD find that odd!

The heat does make my joints worse......as does cold damp weather. So as the cold damp version is what we in the west of Scotland have had so far this "summer" ( heating still on!), I would welcome the chance to "suffer" from the heat.......even to see the sun would be fun!!! M x

Thanks for all your replies regarding hot weather problems, most people react in a strange way when I tell them, so glad there are others out there who understand

I am just back from 3 weeks in Baltimore Md in the states. I was there looking after a brother who has had health issues for the past few months and needed a bit of looking after. The weather in that part of the states is famous for its dull, sunless high humidity sometimes well into the 90's F. I have always hated the weather there and this time was no different. However, this is the first time I have been there since having RD. I had some assistance with walking distances and found myself sitting in a wheelchair waiting for a car to collect me and I realised that I had no pain. After a nights sleep I woke realising that once again I had no pain......that continued for the entire time I was there and because I had no pain I was able more to look after my brother. In fairness I am back home now a few days and I still have no pain even though it is drizziling (or mizziling as we say here in Ireland) in the rain and quite damp. I have a bad history with regards to pain relief over the years. I have been on all of the bio's that i can tolerate (I'm sero negative) I can't take MTX as it attacks my liver. For about six months I was on no medication at all except tramabol for pain. Gradually my pain grew worse and I was put on steroids, a very low dose. I have a history of Depression and was very dubious about taking them as they are not recommended for people like me. I also was put off by the idea of piling on the weight. As time went on my pain and fatigue grew to the extent that I was only able to go from the bed to the sofa, no life at all. The pain was controlling my life, what life I had and so I decided to take the dreaded steroids.

Now looking back I'm wondering if my huge amount of pain relief was due to the extreme humidity or the steroids. All I know is that my hands are open, my limp isn't as pronounced, my energy levels are high and I can go about my day unhidered.......so your guess is a good as mine. Hope all are well. XX

Thanks Heels, good to be back. I don't know whats going on with my body but I'm enjoying it while it lasts. Yesterday I was up a step ladder attaching a bug/fly net to the back door, walking in the park at a brisk rate too, ironing and finding all sort of odd and ends to do in the house........I don't kow myself. It may last, it may not but as I said I'm going to make the most of it while it lasts.

My brother is better than he was but as any woman will tell you men tend to be......well shall we say......difficult patients! I love my brother to bits but there were times I could have screamed.....my very intelligent, patient, loving and understandng brother turned into a 4 year old having a tantrum! There term MAN FLU had to come from somewhere.....

Anyhow, thankfully he has come through the worst and is now very much on the mend. I was due to go back over at the end of July but its may now not be needed.

I hope your well.

Don't question it Jean & long may it last! Don't you be overdoing it though, we don't want you causing yourself an injury with your new-found freedom, though I'm sure Barney & Kells aren't complaining!

Pleased to hear your brother is on the mend & even though I have a "strong" man he is truly suffering just now but when he has a cold, ooo it's the worst ever & so much worse than mine..... it's the simpler things which make them boys again somehow.

I'm not too bad thanks, though can't make my mind up if it's the gabapentin causing brain fog or disease activity/flare as my ankles & feet are really swollen (for me) & I could sleep for England. x
