Morning Joe, I'm not to familiar with this symptom, but maybe a little world with your go, if only to ease your mind.

Hope to day is a good day for you.

Hey Joe, I was still coughing up tar maybe until 5 months into my quit, it gradually eased during those 5 months, some people don't have any coughing or gunk to cough up, I took it as a positive that my lungs were clearing out, even though it is frightening at the initial stage and not pleasant!

PS Vaporizing with vicks or eucalyptus oil a couple of nights a week is good to help lift the phlegm / mucus.....also a spoonful of honey every morning helps the lungs too...

According to my app Joe, I'm still only at 86% for coughs and wheezing (after four months) so there's obviously still some gunk in there. It takes a long time get rid of it I think.

Hey Joe, in a word, YES. I don't even think I've started this delightful phase yet and I'm almost 2 months in. Sigh. I think it can take 6 or 7 months for your lungs to get back to rights. The only thing that's going to speed it up really is exercise. Do not despair! Your body is healing and anything worth doing usually takes at least 3 times as long as we think it should, annoyingly :)
