Hi,

I turned 40 on the 10th January and quit smoking on 12th Jan. I've been doing ok during the week but struggled a bit over the weekend - felt a bit down and really didn't want to do anything but lounge around....

My main concern is this.... I decided that when i quit this time (after several failed attempts over the past 10 years..) i would also stop drinking for at least the first month - reason being that when i have turned back to smoking in the past it has always been whilst i have been under the influence. I just can't seem to do one without the other and once i've had a few beers i just can't control myself!!

In the next few weeks i have wedding and a 50th party to go to and i'm sure that if i go i will end up smoking and drinking... Now if i was single, i just wouldn't go but as my partner and not to mention friends are obviously expecting us to attend both functions i'm in a pickle!!

I feel that the only way i will ever do this is if i am completly selfish and don't put myself in the position to smoke for a while but at what other cost..!!??

Thoughts anyone?

I did the same with drinks... not a drop during January and I think it has helped. Also keeping the weight down which is an added bonus. However, I have not been avoiding risky situations. I am sure this won't work for everyone, but for me its easier not to smoke in those situations than when being on my own. In parties with people I can shout out my decision, be proud and take the moral high ground. On my own "no-one will never know...". Thankfully there are no cigs in the house and no shops too close :)

Perhaps you could go but just dont drink. I find it easier to control my drinking than my smoking whilst drunk. Anyway, good luck with what ever you decide to do.

I did the same!!

I did not drink for the first 5ish weeks. I drove if I had to go to something and we left early if I felt uncomfortable!!

Now, I have no problems with drinking and not smoking, albeit I only partake at the weekends (mostly)....but it does not worry me anymore!!

Everything gets better, the feeling down, the will this ever end, the constant thinking about them! Your doing just fine and there is so many people in this forum to help!!
