Hi Annie!

Your strong physical urges to smoke will last for about 3 days. Don't get me wrong you will still have urges after 3 days as well, but after 3 days you ARE over the worst of it.

I am on day 6 and I still have urges, but it's worth noting that these urges:

1) becomes less frequent

2) are not as strong

3) don't last as long

The first 3 days suck, and you will have days after that which suck also, but take 1 day at a time (possibly 1 hour at a time) and keep reinforcing your quit like you are doing. The key to quitting is motivation and determination. Every time you feel weak you should reinforce your motivation.

We all know the bargaining that comes, and you are doing the right thing.

Things you should do in general:

1) Drink lots of water and fruit-juice

2) Keep yourself occupied, watch movies, play videogames, whatever you want.

3) Spoil yourself - give yourself anything you want except cigarettes. Feel like binging on donuts? Go for it!

4) Read as much about quitting as you can, keep comming here for reinforcement. Knowing why you feel like you do and what to expect is tremendously helpfull.

5) Always keep a list of your reasons for quitting close by.

6) Keep a journal of how you are feeling, it will help you along the way to look back at how awfull you had it just a few days ago.

Things you should do when a crave comes:

1) Take a few deep breaths

2) Get some fresh air

3) Drink some water/chew on gum

4) Remind yourself it is only temporary

5) Tell yourself the pain is only your body healing, it is a good thing.

6) Possibly go for a short run or other excersize.

There are more things you can do, these are what i found the most usefull.

It takes 3 days for the nicotine in your body to evaporate in to a little sprarkly cloud of happiness! Until that point your body will physically be craving nicotine.

After that point its much more habbit related.

Time your cravings...you'll then get to know how short and insignificant they really are in relation to the rest of the day.

Now I wouldn't recommend this, but it did help me on my first quit. I wore an elastic band around my wrist and when the cravings got really bad I'd give it a ping. It really did help take my mind off the fags!

thankyou very much for your reply its nice to no where not alone i just cant believe that a ciggie can make you have all these emotions. great advice that i will take 1 hour at a time. been here so many times before but this time i feel different like something has twigged that i cant smoke no more, enough of excuses the more harder something is the better the results. i keep telling myself lol thanks again

Well done Annie to getting to day 2. But never have just one fag, I did and it amounted to a few more. after making it to my 4th month. I now have quit again and doing ok day 9 for me. Good luck and best wishes Annie. Jacqui :)

well done annie

first three days are horrid if u can get the first week out of the way and just get through it watever it takes then it will get significantly better very quickly after that

it is quite shocking the emotions it stirs up but it all subsides and gets better i swear

just remember cigarettes never come alone they always come in packs so theres no such thing as just one

take each hour at a time

me and my OH did it together i really dont think i could have done it on my own the support and knowing how each other feel is a help in its self

the only thing that bugged me with him now and again was if i shouted at him he would shout back "just cause u wanna fag dont shout at me" i would get mad cause i was shouting at him just cause i wanted to not cause i wanted a fag but apart from that all good
