Hi all, glad I found this site. Hope I'm posting in the right place. After smoking for 35 years (and I'm not even 50 yet) I think I'm ready to quit. Been debating about it for the last few years. Well, I finally made the call and went to the NHS stop smoking clinic and started on Champix. The day before starting it I cut down to half my usual 25-30 smokes, by marking down each one and making myself wait at least an hour.
Today is the start of day 6. I was kind of disapointed this morning as I had 5 in an hour!! Don't know what happened just thought I was going to go completely back to it YIKES!! But, I think an hour has passed since and I'm going back to how I was the last few days. Has this happened to any of you?
So, I haven't really smoked less than I did the day before I started the pills, when I started to try and slow myself down
Think the counseling helps, unfortunately I'll be leaving soon to be with family for a few months so I won't be able to go. That is a scary thought! Although my friend also recently quit so I guess I'll have her to lean on
Anyhow, hopefully I'll be able to check in with you all and get some inspiration.
have a lovely day
Val

Hey Chrissy, You're right we have to keep at it. I called my counselor this morning and told her and I was thinking there is no way, I may as well give up on giving up. She did say some things to me and when I got off the phone I was thinking about it. She said mainly too things, "my stubbornes will probably do it and if not we can try again via another technique"
Well I had a cigarette at 1 and thinking about what she said. After that I got mad, I grabbed my cigs and ashtray and took them to the kitchen. All this time I'm thinking "you cancer sticks are not going to beat me, I'm going to beat you" It is no 4;45 p.m. and I haven't yet had one. Have definitely thought about it, but then get mad. How long it will last I don't know, but I'm going to keep trying. I just know if I don't do it this time I never will. I've been thinking about it for years before taking the steps, so it's now or never kind of thing.
Do stay positive and keep going at it, let me know how it goes, we can cheer each other on.
Hi Val,sounds like calling your counsellor was a very good move,it made you think about having that next ciggy and you did so well going three and threequarter hrs! That's what we need to do more of thinking first,it certainly seemed to work for you well done!By the way i have been smoking for 42 years and its got to stop!Chrissy1.

Hey, you and I both started very young! It was cool then, if only we knew!! I'm getting the urge now, i'ts been about 4 hour, think I'll go munch on an orange and try to keep going! My goal is to go until bedtime?!?!?! we shall see but even if I have one later it will still be a big difference to the 15 I had yesterday. Thanks for writing it helps to know you've done the same kind of smoking the last few days. Good luck with this evening. Have a good night!
Well it's 8:30 p.m., and although today was far from my quite day 6 days from now, I have not had one since 1 p.m. Really feeling the urge right now so thought I'd write this instead of having one. Will I make it through the night
Yes you can, you may think you can't but as I say 1 hour at a time. Go to bed early and try not to think of smoking. Take a look at my answer to your post on What's ahead when you try to quit
It may help to get you through the night.
I can tell you if you can get through the night you will be so proud of yourself in the morning.
Ask yourself "Do I really need one? I can have one tomorrow if I want to, I can wait untill tomorrow it's only a few hours not a lifetime"
Come on it's nearly 9 hrs if you have not smoked, that's more than half a day WOW!

Hi Chrissy, How's the day going? Hope i'ts an easier day for us both. I still have not had one since yesterday at 1p.m. Then again just got up and having my coffee now Here's hoping it continues. You'll do it too, just get mad like I did and talk to the pack and say You're not going to win, I am!!
Hi Val,Thats amazing you have resisted since yesterday and the last ciggy you had was 1 oclock, brilliant!you've done so well, stayed strong and determined to beat old nick.Wish i could say the same for myself, but not done so good i need to got tougher. After reading how well you have done it's given me a boost to try harder. Thanks for that.Got my app with the nurse this morning so going to talk to her about things, plus i've been suffering with my kidneys the last couple of days.Keep on going Val,i think i need to take a leaf out of my own book!Chrissy1.

Thanks for the pep talk Chrissy! Don't know how long I will last but I'm trying a few more hours and it will be 24 hours.
Do try going to the Stop smoking NHS clinics, if you're like me it will help meeting with someone weekly and having a chat about how things are going. Do keep me posted and I'll do the same. Never thought I could do it, smoking since I was 12!! I have been thinking this morning maybe I'll have one, but then I remind myself how many years it's taken me to get to this point, do I really want to kill all the effort??!! The answer is NO!
Do let me know how things go with the nurse and especially what she says about your kidneys.. Good luck!!
Hi Val,How you doing?I must say you inspired me so much this morning with your determination i decided i could do it too!So haven't had a ciggy since 9.30am.Had to go for a blood test after my visit to the nurse, she checked my notes and kidney's were fine July last year.So just got to wait for results to see if its down to the Champix. Also had my carbon monoxide checked and its gone from heavy smoker to light,so that was some good news for me and gave me an extra boost!Look forward to hearing back from you.Chrissy1.
