Hello All,

I am currently looking into what helps people to quit smoking. I know that Nicotine Replacement Products such as patches, gum & lozenges aid you in your quest to quit smoking but i want to know what personally helped you.

For example, Did you use an online or offline diary to keep your thoughts, and feelings?

Any websites which guided you or helped in any way?

Let me know by either replying to this thread or if you would rather, just send me a private mail.

Hi Danny, used this forum and willpower, and no animals or persons were harmed in the process. I think you have to really, and I mean really hate smoking, and then really, really want to quit.

In a Word

MINDSET

Hey Danny,

For me it was most definitely this board and patches that kept me going and helped me get through the first few months.

The other really important thing that helped was a friend in work who is 18 months ahead of me quit-wise. To see him looking like the happiest and most chuffed person about being quit even from as early as day 5 for him instilled in me that its a really positive experience. The brilliant quitters on this board re-inforced this.

I truly believe the above and my positive mindset as a result are the reason that even though my quit was really hard at times, at no point (sober!) have I honestly wanted a cigarette. I wish more people could have that rather than the usual "quitting smoking is hell" message.

Willpower ...

Hi,

I think for me it was initally being sick of being a smoker and not wanting my nephew to see me smoke. I had a job associated with cancer for about 3 and a half years too and I think that slowly set the seed over several years as I really don't want to be the reason for my demise ... poisoning myself to death seemed to be a bit of a dodgy move! I quit 13 months after I left that job after smoking for 18 years!

I gave up cold turkey as I figured I had tried other ways and failed ... managing 3 months at the most before. I also read Alan Carr's book "Easyway to stop smoking". This really really helps to under stand the psychological withdrawals which invariably are the ones (not the nicotine withdrawal so much) which will get you started again. The physical withdrawal is over pretty quick but the real struggle can be the psychological aspect and by reading the book I was able to understand my "triggers" and the fact that having a ciggie didn't actually change the situation. This learning was key for me and very very much still is .. in fact I am thinking of having another read just to reinforce what I have learnt and pehaps see things from a different perspective 5 months down the line.

I have to say that sheer determination has also played a MASSIVE part as I have really struggled at times (not to say you will, all quits are different and I think sometimes things are more intense if you go cold turkey).

The main thing is to truly WANT IT MADLY as I have not had a puff since I quit 19th Jan and sometimes after a drink I have been dying for one but even when I get to the VERY drunk stage my friends can vouch i have never had one .... deep down I wouldn't forgive myself. i am deternined to see if what other long term quitters say is true ... you eventually don't think about it ... when you get to 5 months it is kind of exciting to see if you can get to that point and that is the new determination that keeps you going.

At each stage DETERMINATION is key to get through to the next stage .. IT CAN ONLY GET BETTER!!!!

That's my waffle over .. bet you wished you hadn't asked ha ha!!!!

(OMG --- AND OF COURSE I USED THIS FORUM ... FOR LONGTERM SUPPORT THIS PLACE IS AMAZING XXX)

Cost of them really was the reason I started my quit. Then the links in my sig and the forum kept me going.

Tried twice before using the inhalator but heart wasn't really in it.

I heard that they were on about putting the duty up by 50% so really couldn't afford to smoke anymore and maintain a decent lifestyle for my family.

I also recently found out that I have a few gynae problems that are only going to get worse so I wanted to get myself to a healthy stage in my life. I also want enough energy to be able to exercise and get me one of those nice toned torsos.

I also want to live to see my daughters grow up and hopefully if I am blessed, to watch their children grow up too and then maybe even see their children!!!

I started my quit using patches and an inhalator. I then found this site and it has been the support and inspiration I needed to make me determined. I now don't use patches, have one puff on the inhalator a day and am just using chewing gum and water and a straw!! These are all I need to help me quit and the reasons above!!!
