Oh what an interesting question!

My brother (years ago) tried to quit smoking and swap to cigars, he did smoke less but obviously he still smoked. I once tried a cigar and nearly vomited (sorry too much information!!).

What's the difference between smoking a cigar and smoking a cigarette? Do cigars contain the same amount of nicotine?

The reason I will not have a cigarette is I just do not trust myself and I think when it comes down to having a cigar is do you trust yourself.

I'd consider having a cigar the same as having a cigarette

Don't know what I consider it to be. Just that I'm too scared to try one - I just know that one 'celebratory' puff would take me back to my 20/day habit without blinking.

I would not take a chance a puff is a puff what ever you smoke. xxxx

nsd_user663_4990 profile image
nsd_user663_4990

and when the voices start again saying to you... 'heyyyy you (we) really enjoyed that, how about another one?' and then you smoke more.. and more. you suddenly find yourself once again trapped.. conned into believing one is ok.

One is NOT ok.. it never is.

What you typed there in the OP, is how my mind was thinking in october/november last year.. only i was planning a single cigar at christmas time just after lunch. That ONE cigar re-awoke my quit.. that one cigar led to nearly 8 months of 20+ a day.. that one cigar cost me an 8 month quit.

DO YOU REALLY WANT THIS FOR YOU?

Its not a treat, its a curse.. and always will be while you listen to the demon dressing up that cigar to be something its not.

Its your choice ultimately, but you will regret those moments smoking it. I assure u of that.

READ a post i did in end of august about this very thing.. forum.nosmokingday.org.uk/s...

Sounds like the nicotine mind games.

I have thought the same thing, my mind also told me that after 1 month of quitting that i should have one to celebrate.

Not a puff

Just to repeat im not going to i just wondered what people thought. Lots of people, including people that call themselves non-smokers, have a celebratory cigar once in a while i.e. weddings, new year etc and i suppose what i was really asking is ARE they non-smokers even if they smoke 1 cigar a year????

That describes 'Occasional Smoker', now think about this? At first you start with 1 cigar, then you manage to find an excuse to have another cigar, maybe on a birthday.. perhaps then when you hear someones just had a baby.. then its... 'well its friday :)'... occasional becomes more regular and before long? You are back to your original addiction feeding level.

So basically these people you know, are occasional smokers and this means they are still smokers. They are kidding themselves if they think they can rewrite the laws of addiction, especially regarding nicotine.

True, but they have not been addicted to smoking like us.

Example....I like a social drink and will have a glass of wine at New Year (everyone stands back in utter amazement)

BUT my father is an alcoholic and has not had a single drink for 8 years....he cannot have a glass of wine at New Year.

Hmm... interesting... to be honest in my opinion if someone thinks they can handle a "one-off" celebratory cigar/ciggy/pipe... then so be it. If i thought i could have just one i would. I know a friend of mine was a heavy smoker, and he still has a cigar at christmas and he had one on his wedding day. But apart from that he doesnt smoke anymore. I asked him how he manages it, and he compared it to christmas pudding. Its a treat that comes once a year. And he enjoys it when its there, and doesnt worry about it when its gone.

I think its got EVERYTHING to do with the individual and how their addiction works i suppose. some people can do the "one for special" thing... some people cant. Wish i could.. :p but aint gonna even try!

Ditto NeedACuppa. I've a friend who gave up smoking a couple or so years ago and now can have one or two roll ups every 4 or so months or longer and can keep it at that.

Oh and she's not bothered by a title but if she did have to label herself, I'm sure she'd say... occasional smoker and happy to be.

There's a part of me wishes that in time I could do as she does but I know I couldn't. Certainly not now and not in the future either... all or nothing.

Before I quit so suddenly I kept telling myself that I would stop after Christmas because I wanted to enjoy myself and if I wasn't smoking then I wouldn't be able to enjoy myself.

However, I will be quit 8 weeks on Christmas Eve and am determined that I will not give it up for anything. I wouldn't be able to have one puff without wanting more - it's all or nothing for me.
