How depressing eh!! Went to see doctor this morning and had to step on the scales. Gained over 2 stones since I stopped smoking.

Actually feel ten times worse health wise than when I was a smoker. More breathless etc.

OK firstly well done for quitting and you have done really well sweetheart and we all know how flipping hard it is, so well done.

Weight, oh dear I think this is everyone’s worst nightmare. I still can not get over the unbelievable hunger I felt when I gave up, I presumed I would want to pick because I could not smoke but the truth is you are bloody staving!!

I have put on a stone, but in fairness I stopped smoking a couple of weeks after I came back off a cruise so I can not blame it all on the smoking, however I am an exercise fanatic (swim every morning, gym/class/spin 6 times a week to) and I still managed to gain weight quickly over a short period of time.

I know if I did not do something about it I would just carry on gaining, so I started a health kick last Monday and it's working BUT if I'm hungry I want to smoke and I can't so I want to eat, blah blah which makes the quit hard but it is possible to do both.

All I can suggest is try a healthy eating plan and exercise more, your fitness will come back quickly especially because you don't smoke AND the weight will come off but it takes a while. I read somewhere it takes 6 months to start and correct the weight issue (!!!!!)

I have always maintained I would start smoking again in 6 months if I kept gaining weight, hence the reason I am trying to lose now.

Good luck.

I live in the USA and hope I don't get the conversions wrong here. I have gained 22 pounds which I believe to be 1.5 stone. I quit because of a medical procedure and have seen two doctors in the last two weeks (fortnight). Both times each doctor was fixing to let into me because of the weight gain (remember I had a medical procedure and extra weight is not good) and were stopped dead in their tracks when I told them I had quit smoking. They congratulated me on quitting and said they were proud of me.

Yea There is one for the little guy.

I know. I now feel my belly touching the bed when I lay on my side. I was on the treadmill the other day looked in the mirror and wondered who that fat slob was over there. I mean who is that good looking stud?

If you can break the bonds of tobacco you can drop some weight in the future. That ought to be a piece of cake. Really, just give it a little bit of brain power. If you can tell your chemically dependent brain no you cannot have a smoke; you can darn sure tell you stomach I will eat later.

Okay, I have gone on too long. Just one fight at a time. Smoking now. weight later. You can do this. You have already done the hard one.

I was very aware that when I gave up smoking, I would stack the weight on. And I really didn't want to. I'm quite small (in height) so every couple of extra pounds makes me look like an elephant.

So I went on a pre-emptive diet. I decided that I could eat as much as I wanted but it would be low-cal stuff, so I now nibble on carrots, nuts, fruit etc. It does help that I don't really like chocolate (my teeth won't take it).

But I have enjoyed cooking things which I usually wouldn't do, like soups, quiches. I'm also drinking a lot of water or coffee, which is my current weakness. Anyway, upshot is that instead of putting on loads of weight which I thought I'd do, I've lost about 10lb, without trying.

Thanks for all the sound advice. I just need to get my act together and stop eating all the junk food constantly. Probably just boredom and habit now.

I'm actually embarassed to see people I haven't seen in a while as I know how shocked they are at how big I am now!!!
