On Champix now

Ive just taken my 1st champix tablet.

Anybody else used champix?

Is it ok to drive on it?

Yes I'm on Champix. Have you tried to give up on Day One? The advice is dont.

I'm no medic, but from what I understand, Champix gradually builds up in your system, .5mg on day, 1 mg (.5 x 2) for a few days, 2 mg a day (1mg x 2 - the blue tablets).

My doc advised picking a quit day somewhere between Day 8 to Day 14. I didn't and just thought I'd wait for the Champix to kick in. I read about people who after a couple of days had this revulsion to cigarettes and stopped smoking immediately. Well that didn't happen to me, Day 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 - call came and passed with me continuing to smoke and not feeling anything. I was really fed up. But then, on the evening of Day 13 I just didn't fancy a cigarette. No horrible taste or sickness or anything like that, just didn't want one.

Now 48 hours into not having a cigarette and still no cravings. I do get the odd feeling that I *should* be having a cigarette now, but don't really *want* or *need* one.

Some people have reported severe side effects eg panic attacks, a feeling of disassociation, depression etc, so watch out for that but I think the people who are affected are few and far between.

More common side effects which I have experienced are:

1. Weird dreams

2. Waking up at night (so you're whacked out during the day)

3. Nausea - particularly after the blue ones, so definitely recommend you take them after having eaten.

Hi

Your doc should have gone thorugh this with you (I'm no medic so please don't take what I say as gospel).

As I understand it:

1. You gave up, on Day 2 you were having cravings, so your doc gave you Champix.

2. Champix works on a slow build up to provide a resistance to and repulsion of cigarettes, so you can/should smoke at the beginning of taking Champix in order to give it a chance to get into your system and help with the cravings.

3. If you've already given up, suffering cravings and just started Champix *after* quitting, then it might not have time to build up to help with the cravings.

I'm certainly not recommending that you start smoking again if you can prevent that - and Champix will kick in eventually and be of help. But if you do start smoking in the next day or two, don't think that the Champix isn't working, it just needs time.

If you do start, best thing to do is take it as if it's Day One of Champix; set a definite quit date and stick to it.

If you don't restart - well done you - and the Champix will kick in - just give it a couple of days.

Good luck - and whichever way you do it - keep thinking that very soon you're going to be a non-smoker for good.

Im actually having way less cravings this afternoon, whereas yesterday it was awful.

I am not on champix I am on the patches so dont want to really comment on whether you should or should not smoke. I would say that its down to you yourself, you made it through the hardest 2 days but deffo listen to what your doctor said and if your still unsure - give the surgery a call and ask them. Like Cyprien said - whichever way you do it, you will still end up a non smoker.

Hi Alfie - check out my Day 1 Blog called Champix Quitter - I'm on Day 17 now and quit on Day 11.

Sue is spot on - don't put pressure on yourself now your taking these to not smoke. Just light up when you feel you need to, set a quit date sometime in your second week of taking the pills and relax and let Champix do it's job!!!

I also used champix and found it really good had virtually no cravings at all

Have a good read of the leaflet that came with the champix and remember what the Dr said to you

I have a link to a champix site that tells you lots more about it how it works why it works and all sorts of other things as well
