I posted something similar during the 1st week its a little like bereavement but it is just that you are not doing something that used to be a big part of your life. Its like saying goodbye to an old friend forever, its just that you need to remember that this old friend is intent on harming you, no matter how much you like them saying goodbye is what you need to do.

Its an extremely common feeling, all part of the process.

Denise you are doing so well!! Keep it up!! As the for the empty feeling, I stopped smoking in July - my 1st quit but started after 6 weeks. I had the same feeling - it's like u have lost something and in a way you have - Carbon Monoxide and lots of other poisons, but its what ur gaining that matters - FREEDOM!!

I'm on day 3 now and I'm doing well - had a bad time earlier on, but I'm ok now!

Whatever u do Denise, no matter how much u crave fags - please don't give in, coz u don't want that empty feeling when u have 2 quit again!!

Keep it up love :)xx

Huge thank you to you all for the support :) Couldnt do it without you all im certain.

I see alot of people quit and do so well and then they seem to start smoking again, is this the norm? I really dont want to go there again but it seems that most people do at some point.

I have failed numerous times, and if you don't get your mind right relapses are common. Have a search through Whyquit about relapses its very helpful.

There are also various stages which its easier to fail, in the early stages it is an endurance and you gain a great sense of achievement as time goes on it can become more normal and even a bit boring! Keeping the momentum going can be taxing sometimes, but also people manage to convince themselves that they can't live without smoking, or that they should reward themselves for the great achievements they have made by having a smoke!!!!!

Basically if you want to succeed, follow this one simple instruction.

Don't ever put another cigarette (or cigar, pipe etc) in your mouth again!!!!!!!!

It really is that straight forward!

hello Denise,

Your were im going to be tomorrow. well done so far, keep it up.

NicFirth, truest words ever wrote Don't ever put another cigarette (or cigar, pipe etc) in your mouth again!!!!!!!!

i stopped for 5 months 2 year back. Then went on holiday, there like a dick head thought, "ho your on holiday just have one fag at side of pool like you usto with a beer" (this was when you could smoke in bars in england too) downhill from there.

Once im done this time I am DONE.

Easy to say, not quite as easy to do, but with the right attitude very achievable!

Hi I was off them for 8 months last year. Thought I had it beat and took 1 cigarette. Guess what, next day three and so on. I smoked for 4 months and now here I go again day 4!! My advice never let your guard down, never think you have it beat. But if you fail try, try, try again.

I think you lear from an attempt even if you don't succeed. i learned NOT ONE PUFF & I DO NOT WANT TO BE A SMOKER.

Good Luck

Hello and welcome to the forum! Well done on quitting again but equally kudos for being mostly smoke free in 2008 :)

I agree that you learn from previous failed attempts, not that you cant succeed on your 1st go mind!

Many, maybe even most, have fallen into the trap that we thought that we could have just one now and again, but for virtually everyone its a slipper slope as you have discovered.

The best way to succeed IMHO is to get it out of your mind that by quitting you are depriving your self of some great pleasure, but rather try to see it as a gaining situation (health, wealth, control etc). If you forever think that you are making a dreadful sacrifice by not smoking eventually, one day, that temptation to have just one will become too much!

Best wishes

Nic
