The "Deep Breaths" Technique

Following on Austin's thread, nosmokingday.org.uk/forum/s... until I "saw the light" about the whole smoking/not smoking thing, I always associated the "deep breaths" everyone tells you to take when 'Ol Nic tries to tempt you, with the pain of childbirth

You know, Contraction coming? Take a deep breath until it passes... in....out....in....out...... that's it, deep breaths.... as your brain frantically races ahead wishing the midwife would shut her gob and just MAKE THE PAIN GO AWAY!!!!!!!! ARGHHH!!!!!!!

Why did no-one tell me I should be enjoying those deep breaths, smiling inwardly cos 'Ol Nic actually thinks he has a chance of winning, and I "Oh Serene One" know better?

I don't really get any cravings any more, but I still get the wee odd "notion" for a ciggie, and I actually enjoy the feeling now, as it reminds me how clever I am in quitting :)

Deep breaths, everyone :)

Deep breaths are quite key in my opinion, they are a large part of the technique Neil Casey teaches and it actually surprised me how good they felt, a real deep bottom of the stomach breath, slow and controlled, in and then out, releases endorphins just like the smoking of a cig. In fact, exactly like the very first drag on a cig while your lighting it. Remember how that drag would be longer than all other drags? Yep, the good old endorphins.

But it can still be done without smoking now! And you can still get the same sensation. Try it, it really works.

Thanks Supervillain - that's exactly what I was trying to say - you are so much more articulate than I :o;):)

Other than deep breathing, a lot of other people talk about the 4 Ds. Delay, Deep breathing, Distraction and Drinking. Most of these are a form of distracting the senses i think, but if they work, then why not do it? Stop smoking tips explained
