If at first you don't succeed.....

Hi guys

Back again to have another go at this. I only managed 5 days on my first attempt which wasn't very good. Since then I've thought more about why I failed and my reasons for still wanting to give up.

Failed because I kept a stash of ciggies hidden in nooks and crannies all over the place, just in case. I should have also tried some sort of non smoking aid.

Reasons for trying again are because my hubby has been diagnosed with a serious smoking related illness even though he gave up 3 years ago. We're told of the risks, but think it will never happen to us. The rattle in my chest tells me it is happening to me.

I've recently become a Granny (a young Gran might I add <grin>) and I want to be fit and healthy enough to be a special part of his life. I don't want my grandson to see me smoking. I feel so guilty when I think of what I put my own children through. It must have been awful for them when I selfishly smoked in the house and the car. Thank God they are still healthy and that they never took up smoking.

I've got a long haul trip coming up to NZ in March and I want to be able to go strait through to the departure lounge with my hubby, instead of standing around the nearest smoking area till the last minute then stinking of smoke for a smokers nightmare of a journey.

These are all very good reasons to stop but without willpower, support and understanding from those who know, then I'm just not going to make it.

Being here writing this has already helped because I had time to kill and this has taken my mind off things.

Now I have to take my mum out, who is a 30 a day smoker so this is going to be tough.

I'm using a nicorette inhaler this time. It's a good thing to have handy when cravings really hit in. I'm also using the gum which gives me belly ache if I use it for too long. I constantly want something in my mouth but can't afford to put on weight, so that's going to be another challenge for me.

45hours 25mins so far

:D

Hello,

what good reasons (congrats on your grandson!)

I've found keeping my reasons with me to read at difficult moments really helped, especially early on.

You sound very clear about what didn't work last time and I think that's a really important step. This time you'll know what works and what doesn't.

Sorry to hear about your husband, I hope he's feeling ok.

Best of luck to you, :)

Hi everyone

& so another day begins !! :) Good luck to you Kickingbutt, I believe this is day one for you isn't it? U GO GIRL !!!

Thanks to you all for your well wishes towards my husband. He was a very heavy smoker but he managed to give up Nov 2004 by using Zyban. He has always hoped that he would feel better after giving up, but instead he got a chesty cough which has never gone away and he can't do much without getting tired and breathless. He was recently diagnosed with COPD which is being controlled by the use of a ventilator and tablets.

He has never nagged me about smoking bless him, but he is chuffed that I'm having another go at giving up.

I suffered a bit last night but I couldn't give in because I didn't have any ciggies in the house so I had an early night instead. I think I may have given in if I'd made the same mistake as last time and kept some just in case.

Feeling pretty good today

Take care........Cess xx
