Hi All

Today is my first smoke free day for 21 years, well i statred smoking when i was 12 but never inhaled until i was 15.

My motivation for quiting is several things

1. My father who is 62 has empysema only 34% of his lungs are working and he has trouble doing everyday tasks and has an oxygen tank by his bed, he has quti now for over a year and his health will never be the same but he wont get any worse and seems to improve each time is see him, i have 2 children Liam 6 nand Harry 1 and a beautiful wife Sally who i want to spend the rest of my life with and be heathy with her and my boys.

2. I was drinking far too much 58 -68 units per week smoking only made me do this more so far since friday i have only had 8 units.

3. I was starting to have erection problems probally due to drink this appears to have stopped now but it upset me very much and my wife too.

So that is my honest motivation and my doctor has prescribed me patches and microtabs which so far today have well controlled my urge to smoke but as the day goes on my urge gets greater, i was also a habitual Cannabis resin smoker which i have also given up as well as smoking 20 odd roll ups a day plus i was smoking an once of resin a week, my only problem with the pot is sleeping so i have some nytol for tonite, i have also decied to only drink once a week and only have about 3 pints i think this week it will be on Wednesday so i can watch the footie.

Well i need all the encouragement i can get as this is a complete lifestyle change for my whole family as my smoking and drinking affected them as well as me and i think we will all be better off without all that.

Wish me luck all

Hi Adam and welcome. This forum is just fab and has helped me so much to stay motivated so stay with us and i am sure it can help you too. Thank you for being so honest.

You are giving up for all the right reasons and I for one believe you can do it. As for the pot smoking i understand that too because i have been there and gave that up a few years back. I had problems sleeping and even now still take nytol on the odd night when i can't sleep.

So i will see you around the boards:)

Welcome to the forum! You have come to the right place because you will find the people here are great! It was my first attempt to quit smoking too and with the help of this forum I am succeeding and I think i would have crashed if i didn't have everyone here supporting me. You can do it! Stick with it. Cravings only last 3 minutes so keep busy during those times ;) Keep posting!

You can do it. We are all here to give you support and a boost when you feel like you need to smoke. It is my 3rd day quitting and i feel fantastic already. Your reasons are good for giving up, and i know you can do it. x

Hi Adamski

Well done of making the decision to give it all up. You've got lots of motivation, your Dad, your kids, your relationship with your wife.

I smoked cannabis for years, from age 18 to 32 everyday. I gave this up pretty easy to be honest. I decided to give it up coming up to our wedding, I thought, I'm going on honeymoon for 3 weeks & I'm not going to look for where I can get it or ever smoke it again. I actually didn't bother with it for about 3 days before we left. I came back from our honeymoon with my son lol, so was thankful that I'd given it up before I'd fell pregnant. Once my Son was born my husband started thinking he should give it up & knowing I did it gave him the confidence that he could do it as well. Look at my user name, this is why I was called wonder lungs!! He gave up a year after me, he struggled with sleeping like you are. If I remember rightly it took about 3 weeks for his sleep to get better, but I never had this problem so everyones different. His motivation for not smoking it anymore was our Son, friends coming round etc.....just too bloody awkward.

Trust me....what you think it gives you, relaxation etc is a load of crap....it doesn't do anything for you...you can feel great anyway.

It was realising that I didn't need cannabis to help me cope that got my head round to thinking that smoking has got to be the same. What you think it gives you, relaxation, help with stress etc it doesn't.....I'm on day 14 now & I feel better....I'm relaxed without a fag, dealt with stressful situations without a fag (my husband broke his toe the other day, laying on the floor with the hoover on top of him, Son screaming in panic etc) normally I would have grabbed a fag as I grabbed the car keys to take him up the hospital but I didn't need to & coped fine!

It's all about the brainwashing, try to bear in mind that you coped fine before all the props & if anything coped better. My advice would be to keep away from situations involving all the things you've given up for a few weeks. Kill off the brainwashing monster in your head. Your already doing it.

Good luck :)

:D oops guys - Adamski posted his 1st attempt back in October 2007 but did not post again after day 6.

lorraine67 "revived" this thread yesterday for her 1st attempt, so I think it is her that could do with the repiles :)

Adamski - If you are still subscribed to this thread, I hope you are still quit but if not, we are very happy to see old members return :)
