Hi my daughter is 5 years old and received a kidney from her mother in Jan 2019. For the last 18months or so she has been having repeated UTI's every month. This always results in hospital admission to be treated with IV meropenem (10days). Culprit is usually a klebsiella and she goes home with prophylactic antibiotic (she's had them all- nitrofurantoin, coamoxiclav, fosfomycin, trimethoprim and the most recent one is cefalexin. Drs are at a loss as to why this is happening. She drinks copious amounts of water, is careful about wiping when going to the toilet, but I just wondered if anyone out there has had the same issues and if anything has helped. The other day I came across an a US product called Uqora uqora.com/ which has been getting some amazing reviews- has anyone tried this- if so how did you get on?
I'm just looking for solutions for what appears to be a never ending problem. Thank you.

I had similar issues after my transplant. UTI that never went away, and urine culture was always positive
This is because of high dose immuno drug and the induction therapy with basiliximab Dr said Mychophenalate can cause UTI for some people and changed it to Azoran then gradually UTI went away. But Azoran is inferior to Mychophenalate, which I did not know that time.
Also, our immune system will eventually kill the bacteria that causes UTI, but it will take time due to immuno drugs.
I've had a run of five uti's over the last few months. I think mine were caused by urinary retention. Basically a small amount of urine being left in the bladder over time will cause the infection to reappear a week to a few weeks after the last course of antibiotics has finished. I believe urinary retention in my case was caused by my IBS issues, which in turn caused pressure on my bladder that stopped it being emptied properly. Antibiotics I've tried are nitrofurantoin, coamoxiclav and lastly a ten day course of amoxicillin.
I had similar issues and mine turned out to be caused by a stent left in the ureter for way too long post surgery. Hopefully it's not as serious as that. Your family is in my thoughts! Can't imagine being only five dealing with something like kidney disease.
I am currently going through the same thing and I had a transplant in 2019. My transplant center don't do anything about mine tell I push it. I did end up hospitalized once for one. I had to get a urologist and she will be scoping my bladder and is on top of giving me antibiotics too. I take a pre biotic and a pro biotic to help with urinary health. My UTIs are e coli bacteria but my urologist said I am not doing anything wrong it from having my immune system suppressed. She said we naturally have e coli in our bodies that she sees this in a lot of patients like me. I also have the BK virus and my center wont do anything about it and that could also be the cause. At least your getting help from your transplant center.
I transplanted in sept 2018 got the BK various in nov 2018 suffer with symptoms of a UTI until the BK got better, the uti was always negative but all the symptoms said different, was glad when that was over. I pray you baby feel better soon.
Hi all and thanks for your support and kind words. 3 years on and my daughter is UTI free. Admittedly the last UTI she had was 3 months ago but the last one before that was about 18 months. How did we do it you may ask? D- mannose. Someone suggested we try D- mannose. From that day onwards we have not looked back. Just thought I would share this with you all.
Yes, that worked for my hubby too. My hubby takes a cranberry supplement. Apparently D-mannose is naturally found in cranberries. Yeah for mother nature!
Do you mind sharing the D-mannose dose that's working for your daughter and if she's also on cranberry supplements with it? I have experienced multiple UTIs, the first started a few days post transplant (previously had never had one), and all have been klebsiella requiring a hospital stay and IV antibiotics (ertapenem). The last one I had was a little over a year ago after which I was put on a regimen of Hipprex + vitamin C which worked to keep them away, but ID wants me to come off of that now. They have agreed to allowing me to go on a Cranberry supplement + D Mannose to keep them at bay but have not been helpful with recommendations for specific supplements or dosages so any help/advice as to what has worked would be greatly appreciated! So glad to hear you found something that worked for your daughter and hoping to also have the same luck. Thank you!
I also got UTIs all the time. I am on nitrofurantoinas a preventative. I take one capsule every night of nitrofurantoin. I also take acidophilus 2 capsules per day and a fiber gummie once a day they help with urinary health. By doing this I have had very few UTIs.
Sorry to hear about your daughter's reoccurring UTI. I never had one and I believe it is because I have used bidet toilet for years. I do not take supplements for prevention either. I just wanted to make sure you ask her doctors before you start her any any supplements because many food based products and vitamin supplements can interact with her medication and cause unexpected adverse side effects.
Yes her medical team are fully aware of me introducing D mannose into her daily intake. I have also taken a greater interest into other herbal remedies. She used to have daily stomach pains and I used to get calls from her school to collect her due to such cases. However I've also introduced daily mint tea, chamomile and green tea which have worked a treat. Stomach pains have reduced vastly and use of movicol is practically non existent. Creatinine has also reduced. Good news all round. I'm not advocating that this will work for everyone, but it has for my little one. 😄
