Kidney rejection episode 4 weeks post transplant from a living donor.

Hi we are 5 weeks post transplant from a living donor. My son is the patient. Lowest the creatinine level has been is 1.7 when we left the hospital. Came home, took all meds as prescribed and all bloodwork. Last week went in for labs creatinine was 1.8 on Monday. Went for labs on Thursday and it had jumped to 2.2. Now he has been in the hospital for 8 days. His creatinine went as high as 3.5. Had a kidney biopsy, was treated with all the same medications he received after transplant surgery. Transplant team assumed he was having a rejection episode and treated it as such. His level remains at 2.5. Now they are saying they might have to do another biopsy of another part of the kidney to get a more acurate picture of what is going on. They are saying it is probably related to my son being young (21) and having a very robust immune system.

Have any of you had this experience post Transplant? If so, was it resolved?

Please any insight we would be most grateful to hear.

I am sorry to hear that, you must be so worried! Yes, unfortunately rejection can happen especially with the first year. I am glad they are treating him in the hospital because there are many effective therapies that they can use even if the first one didn't work well enough. Please try not to worry and let the medical team apply their tools. Hang in there!

My son had a transplant in feb with me the living donor. He was fine for a few weeks then his creatinine started to rise. He Was admitted to hospital and they found that the stent used to support the ureter where it enters the bladder had clogged.....they removed it but his creatinine didn’t come down. He had a biopsy etc but nothing out of place was detected ultimately it sorted itself out but it took 3-4 worrying weeks.

Hello. I recently had a transplant on 8/14. Pre surgery my creatinine level was 11.0. Post surgery it started dropping down fast. Its now at 1.97 but has slowed drastically. They want 1.35. They said if it does not come down, they would schedule a biopsy. What they told me so far is to drink plenty of water and walk daily for 30 minutes. My labs are this Wednesday. I will follow up with you to let you know if it worked. Not sure how much water your son drinks but they're recommending 64oz a day. Apparently, staying hydrated is key according to UCSF

Hello Qdog, I had my transplant in May of 2000 and I had the same issues your son is going through I was 24 and they told my family & I the same thing & that my immune system was fight & rejecting the kidney because other than the kidney problems, I was young and healthy & hadn’t never been sick in my life so when my body recognized a foreign body it went to war which would have been a good thing if it were a virus but it was my kidney it was attacking my kidney I got from my big sister. So after the up & down creatinine, back & forth to the hospital & the biopsies (I hate those) they finally got my meds right and my creatinine settled down to 1.4 & they got me on the right track. Qdog tell your son to not to get discouraged it’s gonna get better, our bodies are a strange yet wonderful creation so we have to deal with bumps in the road but he is going to be fine I speak it over his life. Hello Qdog, how’s everything going with your son? Every since your post I hadn’t been able to stop wondering about & praying for your son, and I know you guys are busy but if you get a chance could you give us a update on how he’s doing? I having been in the same situation, I understand how stressful it can be but I hope all is well.
