Hi - Today 8 weeks ago I received a Donor Kidney from a good friend of mine. I suffered for 20 plus years of IGA and luckily found a Donor before going onto dialysis. So far everything is going very well, the lab reports and adjustments they are having to do as this Kidney keeps learning is working great. I am from the Richmond VA area and like to mentioned that Henrico Transplant Center/Hospital was the best experience anyone can wish for.

Now my question to some of the more experienced Donor rexeipents, do you experience sometimes discomfort in the region where the kidney is located?

I used to be very active cyclist. Does anyone have any experience riding hard after the transplant. How do you protect the kidney area in the event of a crash?

Congrats! Yes, sometimes I get discomfort, and a few times terrible, terrible pain. Docs told me it is (Phantom Pain) at the site of incision and that it will likely always occur. Fortunately, its been infrequent.

As for activity, it was nearly a year post before I could get into anything. I do yoga, nothing high impact, minimal cardio, I also took kick boxing (non partner) and I enjoyed it but the cardio aspect was too much for me. We do bike in the summer very regularly and I have had no problems with this. I do think about impact when driving cars, given where the seat belt is, but have not thought of it in any other context. Congrats again.

Thanks for the feedback very helpful. It’s always helpful to hear from other patients going through the same thing. I will hold off on the exercise to give it more time. In the meantime I’ll work on getting to lower my BP medicine so I don’t have to deal with the side effects.

Thank you again for your feedback. I will certainly try to get back on the bike

Congratulations on your miracle! I too had pain in the area of my transplant. Keep an eye on it and make sure you tell your transplant coordinator if it continues. I wound up with a hernia in my transplant incision & an entrapped nerve. I had to have it repaired. I am not saying that is what you have, but weird things do happen. With time you won't even notice where your new kidney has been placed. And moderate exercise is always good....just not putting undue pressure on that area. Good luck and remember to be your own advocate. I am 18 years post transplant with fantastic kidney function!

Since you are only 8 weeks out, I am sure you have been on a lot of steroids. I am also sure they told you that due to that you heal more slowly. It could be that the discomfort is due to your body continuing to heal. I had some surgery over a year ago and it actually took me a good 3 months before my discomfort from the surgery was completely gone. Keep on top of your discomfort though. Let the transplant center know if it continues. Best of luck!
