I used to take Ibuprofen when my knee flared up but since losing a kidney my rheumatologist said ‘no nsaids’ but didn’t offer an alternative other than cocodamol which has no effect.
I emailed my Macmillan nurse and she said “If you are not taking ibuprofen daily its ok - its ok to take it only if needed “
I really want to protect my kidney, any ideas for alternatives or is it ok to take Ibuprofen occaisionally?

Here's the thing. it is KNOWN that ibuprfen destroys the kidneys. What is not too often? How much is too much. No one is the same. You can take it one day and it will be fine but the next time, not fine. Why chance it? It is what destroyed my kidneys, and it was prescribed by my doctor. There are other things you can do to mitigate the pain. I am surprised your rheumy only had one solution. I would call them back and have a better discussion and push for a solution. I also have severe psoriatic arthritis, and I am on a biologic. I take Tylenol once i a while for push through pain. Helps, not like ibuprofen does, but it is what it is.
According to my doctors and pharmacist, Ibuprofen is processed through the kidney while acetaminophen is processed through the liver. I use topical products for joint flare ups, Orthagel works wonders and you can find it on Amazon.
Tylenol. Ice. Heat. Acupuncture. Do not take NSAIDS if you want to stay keep your kidney and stay off dialysis. That is truly how it is. I just suffer the pain.
