Please share your experience with Prolia and CKD level 3 or 4. A Primary Doctor is recommending it.

It is sometimes prescribed for men. I am asking for someone else with CKD.

I'm in Stage 4 CKD with a very slow decline for 20 years. I started Prolia maybe 5 years ago and see no decline related to Prolia. I'm carefully followed with labs before each Prolia shot. Prior to Prolia, I've taken two falls and broke a hip each time, part of my spine collapsed due to osteoporosis requiring emergency surgery, and have had many, many compression fractures in my back. No further damage since I've been on Prolia. Well, one of the falls and broken hips incurred one week after starting Prolia. I said I was just trying it out to see if the Prolia worked. :) Everyone is different, but that's my experience with CKD and Prolia.

Also . . . very important for me, before Prolia, I took one dose of Reclast and it totally tanked my kidney fuction SEVERELY. That is the reason I was moved to Prolia. I CANNOT TAKE RECLAST because of effects of the damage it caused to my kidneys.

maybe u need to see an orthopedist...preferably someone who specializes in osteoporosis. They will give you the best advice.

Endocrinologists and some Rheumatologists treat patients with Osteoporosis.

Prolia is well prescribed but not for everyone. Many side effects.

I take XGeva which is a cousin to Prolia. Checking calcium levels is very important.

I'm on hemodialysis and got my first Prolia dose...it caused my Calcium and PTH to both be very high. I get the second dose Apr 30 so we'll see what that causes.

I have been taking Prolia for several years..GFR 30..my calcium and Pht are also high, my endocrinologist or nephrologists seem unconcerned. Should I be?

Good question.

I have osteoporosis and am also on dialysis. I went to see a doctor about the osteoporosis and felt they were pushing the Prolia to me. Plus I had concerns with some of the side effects. Then in 2024 the fda put a black box warning on Prolia . I have attached an article with more information.

Hope this information is helpful

Thanking you very much for sharing information on FDA warning on hypocalcemia for people with CKD

I had the choice between Fosomax and Prolia. I looked up the side effects and went with Fosomax.

Nice are options for those with CKD if needed.

I used to take prolia and had no problems. I understand no two people are the same. All of my doctor;s were on board and liked the idea. However ( long story) due to insurance issues I no longer take that or any treatment. I have yet to talk about another suitable and comparable alternative to prolia. I have CKD stage 5.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Understand it is not covered by some Medicare Insurance plans.

Would definitely recommend doing your homework on this one. According to AI (Grok 3), Prolia requires “decent” kidney function, and does not come without considerable potential risks, which include increased risk of serious infections, severe bone, joint, or muscle pain, sometimes debilitating, possible jaw necrosis, & supposedly “rare” unusual thigh bone fractures. It can also cause hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels) in 15-20% of CKD patients.

Not sure how bad your bones/osteoporosis is, you may want to consult a nephrologist or even a naturopathic doctor for more natural remedies. Boron deficiency is also linked to osteoporosis, osteopenia, & osteoarthritis, however it’s use or dosing in CKD appears to be lacking sufficient data and may be somewhat controversial.

My friend who has CKD 3b and questioned the Prolia has spoke to her Doctor and they decided not to do the Prolia shot. Thanks for the good information. I shared it.
