Tylenol 3 with Codeine…I need a substitute…Help

I’m stage 3b and maintaining. I just had foot surgery this morning. My orthopedic surgeon consulted with my nephrologist and decided Tylenol 3 with Codeine would be best to start . If that didn’t work I could take low dose Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen 10-325mg. The Tylenol 3 is making me vomit, but I think it’s the Codeine not the Tylenol as I take regular Tylenol for pain. I’m really hesitant to take the Hydro. Has anyone on this forum been given kidney friendly pain killers after an outpatient procedure. I’m looking for alternatives.

thank you.

Yes, I was given oxycodone (? spelling) for my foot surgery and that helped.

I was also given oxycodone (Suzell56 spelled it correctly) for my foot surgery. Part of the rationale was that having the narcotic separated from the Tylenol allowed me to use them on separate schedules. My surgery was probably less severe than yours as I only took 1 pill of narcotic. My surgery was 8 days ago. So, I'm not sure what would be best for your stomach as well as giving you the relief you need.

A month old but a great question! Tramadol, if it works for you!, is a good non hydrocodone alternative. Try it if needed. If it doesn’t work, then it’s tylenol. Oxycodone is hydrocodone. Tylenol #3 is hydrocodone and tylenol. Roxicet is hydrocodone thry are all hydrocodone and close derivatives. Some may have more, some less, but yes pretty much the same. I ended up now on oxycodone 5mg 4 times a day and because it isnt strong enough, i add a tylenol twice a day. I found it helped a lot when normally they dont help at all. I also use 4% lidocaine patches on my wrecked knee helps surprising amount and is OTC. The journey is difficult for pain control. No shame. Best

Thank you for the reply. I decided that I would go w the Tylenol 3 and only took 5 over 2 days and then just gritted my teeth. You probably know the anxiety of putting anything in your mouth. I’m one month out from surgery but still have some pain. I’m using CBD cream on foot. I also use the lidocaine patches and swear by them for knee, hip etc.

btw I LOVE your nom de plume. I’m a big cat person

Take good care

Thank you! I kinda have a lot of rescues. People abandon them and I take thrm into my home. Best hobby ever, tho pricey. Keeps my faith up.

Yeah we need a new drug! Also, the voltaren nsaid pain gel, that really works on my hands. I don’t overuse it as it does have nsaids but ya gotta have sthg! Take care, Adrienne

I found a gel that’s better than Voltrain and all my Drs have approved. I buy it by the carton when In London as many of my friends (and my mom) swear by it. It’s a generic pain gel by BOOTS pharmacy. Why London. My daughter and SIL live here and I had to make an emergency trip yesterday. She developed preeclampsia at 27 wks and the baby had to be delivered. I also have IBS. The stress from an 11 hr plane trip, the worries about my daughter, the baby etc did not do me any good. Now I have to contend with what to eat. My SIL is very considerate but has other things on his mind. Right now some consolation is their 14 lb rag doll that doesn’t know where his mom has gone.

Thank you for answering me back. I’m feeling isolated over here, when usually my trips are fun and exploring and filled with museums and having a great time with my daughter and SIL .

Sylvia, sorry for missing your reply! Oh but London sounds fun to visit. Sounds like you have the local slang down.

I stayed four months up in north shields/newcastle upon tyne area, and it was a blast. Got to learn tons of new vocab and slang.

All you can do is watch yur diet best you can, try to take a walk and buy fresh foods as often as every day. With it all being imported there, read your labels. I enjoyed the Costco there!

Bet you enjoyed the grand baby. I know about the stress gut…it causes me to go up on my steroids I have to take 24/7, which bloats me up all over but ya gotta do what you gotta do.

Let us know how you are or send me a message any time :-) Adrienne

Hi, thank you so much for your reply. Everything turned out great. The baby finally came home and is now 6lbs. I leave again mid week so I can hold him. Its been a joy to FT and get daily pics.

However, CKD and IBS is never far from me. I am maintaining, but it’s a frustrating journey. I am also about 2 more visits away from my rheumatologist diagnosing me w fibromyalgia. It can be a struggle. I do what I can

Btw I love your “cat on a cloud”. I love cats and live with one who is very spoiled.

I'm stage 4 and I use Diclofenac NSAID gel for my neuropathy pain in my feet. Articles say that only 10% of the NSAID is absorbed into the blood stream. I asked my super good nephrologist about it and he said it's fine to use.

if you do not mind , what stage ckd are you in ?

3a/b. I just moved up to 10mg oxycodone. It’s helping more but takes a good month to balance.

in reply to CatOnACloud

Oxycodone is more potent than Hydrocodone in the same mg strength. They are not the same drug. Hydrocodone is marketed under the brands of Vicodin, Lorcet, Hycet, Norco, Lortab Elixir, Anexsia, Vicodin ES. Oxycontin and Oxycodone are just those names.

I am stage 4 and have severe back pain. I used to get up in the mornings and take 800 mg of Ibuprofen but that is not allowed anymore. I did a Google search years ago to try and find an alternative to Ibuprofen for renal patients. I found an article from the Hospitalist website on just that topic. It named Methadone, Hydrocodone, and Fentynal as the 3 safe painkillers for renal patients. I started seeing a pain management doctor 3 years ago and she prescribed the 5 mg Hydrocodone as needed for pain. It has not affected my kidney function at all. You should be safe with that.

I am going to ask my neph about these pain meds. I used to take a lot of NSAIDS which caused my CKD. I have terrible knee pain, occipital neuralgia, neck pain and sciatica but only take Tylenol once in a while, and just “suck it up”. My neph said I could use an analgesic gel.

in reply to MinnadeParis

See my reply above to Cat about the Diclofenac gel. Don't know if they have it under that name in the UK.
