So next week I’m going to my dental surgery to get three tooth implants. The first session is when they drill metal rods into the bone. Once the local anaesthetic wears off it’s very painful. I’ve had one done before now this time three at once!! Last time I didn’t know about my CKD so as I can’t take codeine (makes me vomit) I took a strong anti inflammatory every four hours with acetaminophen every four hours inbetween the doses. After about 36 hours I was okay.
Soooo this time due to CKD I won’t be able to take an anti inflammatory!!! I’m dreading it. Is there any other painkiller that I could take that’s safe for my kidneys at CKD3? Only need something for two days. How about tramadol? Any ideas?

Actually that’s true. I should probably just stick to the same regime as last time. I don’t see my nephrologist for another two weeks. Cardiologist next week. I’m getting awful heartburn from stopping the esomeprazole. The famotidine just doesn’t work. Lots of loud belching!!! I am going to persevere though as I’ve been on it for over four years and it’s time to stop
I have the worst teeth. My hubby says he should have looked in my mouth before marriage Three weeks ago I had a bridge, very old, break. Plus three root canals and an implant in the last year prior to this break. Took a neighboring tooth and a crown. 3 hours, wide awake open mouth dental surgery. Not as bad a childbirth but still awful. Great doc so I wasn’t scared. I took Tylenol with codeine after. I took a big dose initially, prescribed and felt horrible. Called my son who’s a paramedic. He said to take the very smallest dose. So I only took like 1/3 of the recommended dose and only for a few days.
While I was on it I saw the nephrologist and to be honest firgot to ask. I cannot take any pain relievers aside from Tylenol as it causes blood in my urine. I followed my son’s advice. Took the lowest amount possible for the shortest time possible. With ckd3b, I try and heal everything with ice. 6 hours after your implant do 20 minutes ice on then 20 minutes off. BTW, it’s my 7th implant. Use ice, rinse, eat healthy, make soup ahead. Took two plus weeks but I’m feeling much better. Remember this is surgery not a filling. Be kind to yourself. You can replace a tooth easily but not a kidney. Ice! Ice! Ice!
Wow that’s a lot of work. I’ve had a couple of root canals done which they then capped. Didn’t enjoy that at all. The last one that he wanted to do I just asked him to pull it out instead so I can have a nice new implant. Actually I rang them today and put it off until next month. I have enough going on this month. But yes I’m going to listen to advice from you and bassetmommer and just use what I did before. Alternating Tylenol and Nurofen every two hours and also ice. Agree that it’s actually more like bone surgery than dental work. Have cleared my diary the following day. Thanks for your advice
Paracetamol alone isn’t enough. I’m having three metal rods drilled into my jaw but like bassetmommer said if I take Nurofen just for a couple of days it isn’t the end of the world. I’ve too. The stronger painkillers make me feel so sick
I can get very high blood pressure and also have a secondary kidney disease (drta) so I can't even consider ibuprofen. (Also have a heart issue). I can't take codeine or Percocet due to opioid allergies, so when I needed an extraction recently they gave me 3 days worth of tramadol, which really helped. It's the only opioid that has not made me nauseous (*it's only kind-of an opioid)
That’s good to know. Thanks. Tramadol was the one I was asking about when I first posted. I did a lot of research before posting and that was the only alternative I could find that wasn’t too bad for kidneys. I’ve delayed my ‘op’ for a month so I’ll ask my nephrologist in a couple of weeks
Good idea. I used it for an impacted/infected wisdom tooth and also had a root canal and used the leftover pills for that. I get nerve pain in my face (trigeminal neuralgia) and was terrified of the pain, I am already on so much medicine for it. But tramadol wasn't bad, gave me insomnia for a few nights for whatever reason, then I was back to baseline. It really helped the pain but takes 40 minutes or so to kick in for me.
Hi there, I noticed on your reply that you have trigeminal neuralgia. I have occipital neuralgia and the pain can be unbearable at times. Even my eyeglasses can trigger an episode. Not many ppl are aware of these issues. What do you do for pain? I take Tylenol once in a while or just “suck it up”. Treating my pain with plenty of NSAIDS is what caused my CKD3b.
Actually , I have both trigeminal neuralgia and occipital nueralgia, I am on a lot of meds, I am on the max dose of gabapentin (neurontin), I take oxcarbazapine (which is an anticonvulsant that only works with TN I think) and I take amitryptaline. I also get injections directly into the back of my head for the occipital neuralgia. I used to get up to 40 occipital lightning-pains a day and 25 TN stabs right in my face. Both are really terrible. If it gets worse I get qualified for brain surgery for the trigeminal pain. There's a vein pressing right on the nerve. But I also have a brain cyst that's inoperable that could be causing both. They don't know. I've been taking meds since 2015 and it's unbearable in the summer, esp with just wind from an AC hitting my face. Heat, cold and wind are the biggest triggers for the TN but rubber tire smells and hospital trigger the occipital stuff.
I’m so sorry to hear about all this. My ON was caused by a car accident about 9 yrs ago. At first it was thought to be headaches, and I replied that my skull was on fire. I knew what a headache feels like and this is not it. I finally got the correct diagnosis. I had a spinal injection at the base of my neck…..didn’t do anything…then some of those base of the skull injections, which worked better. I was then put on Pregabalin 60mg…..it didn’t help much. I was also taking massive amounts of Aleve, Motrin, etc no opiads. I also had sciatica. Fast forward all these yrs and I’m diagnosed w ckd3b! I’m thinking about asking for the base of skull shots again, but will check w my neph first.
Thank you! You're right, neuralgia is really hard for people to understand. It's weird and unpredictable, and the triggers are super odd to a lot of people! I followed you, too
I’m so sorry you’re having to put up with that. It sounds horrendous. I was on an international flight once and had the same stabbing pains in my face for hours. I wanted to scream!!! Turns out I was very dehydrated and had blocked sinuses. Every flight I board since then I drink water like a fish and take saline nasal sprays. Worst pain ever!!!
