PERITONITIS SUCKS

Third night in my local hospital for a bacterial infection. Probably would not have caught it, if I hadn't decided to do a manual exchange after a rough night on the cyculor the night before and painful cramps all day. Sure enough the fluid that came out of me was cloudy. You don't see your fluid doing the cyculor. I have been sick since June off and on. Don't know when I was infected. On IV antibiotics and antibiotics in my dialysis fluid. Good night and stay safe and smart!!! I will be smarter after I get back home!!!

So sorry to hear that you’re not feeling well. Please don’t beat yourself up about the delay in recognizing the infection. Things happen. I pray that you have a speedy recovery.

Hope you feel better! Maybe you had it already which is why you were hurting on the cycler. I was always extra cautious which of course made me a nervous wreck. Hard not to be!!!

Are you using drain bags on the cycler or a drain hose to the sink or toilet? I used a drain hose and it had a viewing window in the line where it comes off the cycler. It's just a wider area on the line that allows you to get a better view of the draining fluid.

Wow, this is what we all dread happening. I don't have anything on my drain line that allows me to "see" if the fluid is cloudy or not, nor do I wake up in the middle of the night to look at it even if I did. So a LOT of this is going by faith when using he cycler and draining straight into the drain. The only time I get to see the fluid is during a kt/v test where I have to drain into a bag, but that only happens every three months I'm told, so if I get an infection, the pain would signal me before I ever got a visual. Except that what you just told me is a great way to check things out, simply do a daytime manual and see what the effluent looks like.

Now another difficult scenario with all this is that I get gas cramps at times and it makes me wonder immediately "do I have an infection?". Well a few hours go by and the cramps go away, so I assume that there's no infection. I assume that if it were an infection, the cramps would not go away.

Did you have other symptoms other than cramps, such as elevated temp or chills or anything to let you know it was something other than gas cramps? You said you had a "rough" night on the cycler. What does "rough" mean, symptom's wise?

Good question for my nurse. Can you get an infection and not have symptoms for several weeks, then wham? And can you get an infection from sources other than accidental. Meaning like a secondary bacterial infection after a viral infection? Inquiring minds.....

Really appreciate you posting on this. It's what all of us dread, but I'm sure a lot of us will experience.

I don't know about a viral infection, but I know you can get an infection from your colon if it is backed up, that is one reason to make sure you are not constipated too often. The other reason would be that you also get better dialysis with an empty colon.

Well dang. I didn't know about that source of infection either. Thanks for the info!

It was rough because the cramps woke me up. Had the same experience last Monday night and thought it was gas but evidently it wasn't. Got out at the hospital yesterday and I'm home but I'm exhausted and was told it would be a few weeks before I'd feel back to normal. Course I don't know what normal is anymore. I just know now that if I wake up with cramps that's it's not gas. They told my sister that if I'd waited one more day that I would have been dead which is very scary. Did my cycler last night and everything was fine. I guess I was lucky this time and God was with me. Woke up with a panic attack this morning and trembling for an hour or so. No more pool for me this year. I am quite embarrassed as I just said last week that you can get in the pool as long as it was maintained but after a lot of rain and then algae it is not safe for us at all. I think the algae got me. I can't think of any other scenario of how I picked up the infection. I will stick to indoor pools like the "Y" next summer. Didn't get my knees done this summer cuz I wanted to enjoy it but I might as well had gone ahead and got them done. Live and learn! Thank you all for the well wishes! God bless us all!!!

So sorry, other than healing good thoughts, don’t have any first hand or second hand experience or suggestions to offer.

Totally sucks. Feel better soon!

When I was doing PD on the cycler, the drain line had a section near the machine that was wider and that is the inspection window to check for cloudiness.
