Hello- I have been reading with great interest about PD which does interest me but comes with a few complications. I am 5ft 10 in tall - weight is 160 - I need to lose some but one of the medications I have to take puts weight on. It states that you are allowed extra fluid on PD - does the allowance go by body weight? This really is a big concern for me - the extra food allowance does not bother me but the fluid does I suffer with bad constipation as well which does not go down well with PD - the fluid helps. Also I have read about some of the constipation mixtures you take with water that forms a gel - does that have to come out of your fluid allowance if you could allow it as a separate item I would always be drinking the constipation mixture to get the extra fluid. I know the allowance for HD is 32 fluid ounces but I was wondering how much more you are allowed on PD as it is more flexible - thanks

I am on PD and I do not have a water restriction...but I am also still making some urine...My Neph told me that unless I begin to retain water he will allow me to choose how much I drink...I do stay under 60 ounces a day ( including my morning coffee) because I feel comfortable with that amount...I take a Vegetable Tablet Laxative every morning and I am not constipated....alot will depend on how stable your Dry Weight is and monthly labs

Hello - thanks so much for the information. I was under the impression that you had to have no more than 32 fl oz of fluid per day - I found it fascinating that you were taking 60oz on PD per day. I was trying to find out if it was based on body weight and height etc but here in the UK we are a bit short on information that is why I find this site so helpful. Does having 60oz fluid have any detrimental effects on your body. I am not in that position just yet but I am trying to gather as much information as possible. Many thanks.

It has more to do with how much residual kidney function you have and how much urine you make....I do not swell, so my Neph let's me drink however much I want...I imagine as my kidneys slow ddouwn urine process he will like to see me reduce my fluids...I have been on PD for over a year and I would be happy to answer any questions that I can...I love PD...I do it on a Cycler at night while I sleep...I feel so much better...I think with PD they have less fluid restrictions because you do it every night, as with HD you only do it 3 times a week...The PD is more like your natural kidney

A Vegetable Oil Base Laxative is gentler on your GI Tract than some Laxatives...as I am suppose to take it everyday while on PD...but whatever works for you...without raising Labs is probably good...

Hi,I am on PD, I do the cycler every evening. I used to do manual PD but the cycler overnight definitely gives you more freedom. I'm lucky as I don't have a fluid allowance which is good as I have always drunk a lot. Your treatment will be tailored to the needs of your kidneys so it's best not to compare your care to what is on the Internet. Use the information as a guide but not gospel.
