I have low grade cancer in my left kidney, I may need to have it removed. What can you eat, drink, etc with only one kidney.

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Best of luck with your surgery and treatment.

There are some posters here with only one kidney. It would probably be best to discuss it with your Nephrologist and get a referral to a Kidney Dietician.

Best wishes to you, try to stay positive no matter what life hands you.

Actually, I am hoping that someone on this site has had this operation and can tell, me what their experiences have been in regard to eating drinking, etc.

I'm sure they'll be by, everyone doesn't read every day, I didn't want you to feel you were being ignored. Be patient, it's still the holiday weekend. I hope you get some helpful answers next week here.

If your other kidney is healthy...plant based diets are just good for overall health regardless, and good prevention too. Just drink water and cut meat and dairy down to a side-dish.

My mum had a nephrectomy over 4.5 yrs ago and she/we consider her condition now the same as anyone with CKD (she is technically CKD3 now). So we advise on a relevant diet eg low protein, but are currently focusing on low sugar too in order to try to reduce increasing proteinuria (which seems more common with single kidneys - links available on request).

Re the nephrectomy, mum recovered quite well (except for the proteinuria) and the key thing is cancer has stayed away following annual scans.

Check with your doctor, but as long as there is no cancer in your R kidney, I don't think you are any different from someone that was born with one kidney, or someone that has had a transplant . I have had a transplant and have only one functioning kidney. I watch my salt intake and try to eat heart healthy, but I don't have to follow any set diet. I keep hydrated and eat pretty much whatever I want.Always check with your doc

My aunt lost one kidney as a teenager. Was advised not to have kids. Well she had 3 kids.. smoked for many years and just passed away at 80 due to Covid.

I love those stories, it goes to show that genetics help more than anything and also a positive attitude. I bet she enjoyed her life and outlived her Drs. expectations.

I have a friend that had kidney cancer in one kidney. She eats everything in moderation. She has never cared for alcoholic beverages. The body has an fair number of backup organs in place for you when you think about it. Wish there was one for the heart and brain. Lol.

Dear winabago,

As someone who has had a Kidney Transplant, in July 2013, I'm going to Stick My Neck out and say....assuming that your remaining Kidney is 'working' OK and that you suffer No further damage- as a result of Surgery... then you should be able to Eat Normally, within a few weeks (months) of your Operation.

Clearly you DO still need to Talk to, your own, Consultants/ Doctors on this issue- before running Headlong to the local Pizzeria!

Can I finally leave you with my Very Best Wishes and a

Happy New Year
