Carbonated drinks

I've seen on here that carbonated drinks are not good for CKD patients. Could somebody explain why please? I use a Soda Stream to make my tap water fizzy & that is my favourite drink now that I do not drink alcohol. The bubbles are made with carbon dioxide . For my US friends I should explain that I do not drink "soda" ie Cocoa Cola etc.

The concern with soda is the phosphorous in it and in some cases the caffeine and even sodium. Bubbles are OK.

As I said, I am not referring to what is called "soda" in the US.

And as I said, bubbles are ok. in other words, carbonated water is fine.

Based on my own experience with CKD, dialysis, and kidney transplant, I never came across anything that suggested carbonation was bad for kidneys. It’s the phosphorus is many, most colas that cause an issue. I stopped colas at stage 3 ckd. However, restarted once I was transplanted as my phosphorus was always rather low. My transplant neph told me to drink Diet Coke.

Honestly, I don’t think artificial sweeteners in colas are particularly helpful to body in general.

Thank you. I now feel confident to continue with my sparkling water made with CO2 in a Soda Stream.

I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE LI9GHT COLAS ARE BETTER LIKE DIET 7 UP OR SPRITE OR GINGER ALE AND ROOT BEER. I DRINK ONE JUST ONCE IN A WHILE NOW AND WATER MOST OF THE TIME.

Thank you for asking the question like you I don't drink alcohol and don't know where I'd be without my fizzy water

Researchers found several brands of sparkling water, including Topo Chico, Bubly , Polar, and La Croix, contained measurable amounts of man-made chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS for short. Polar, the second-highest, contained 6.41 parts per trillion.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitously detected in populations worldwide and may hinder kidney function. The objective of the study was to determine longitudinal associations of plasma PFAS concentrations with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and evaluate whether a lifestyle intervention modify the associations.

I get good tap water in the UK & carbonate it with my Soda Stream. I appreciate that nearly all food & drink substances in the US are contaminated in their processes - even the bread has sugar in it! When I lived there we had water from our own well.

As with all things, quantity and quality are important considerations. Sounds like you have the quality part covered. 😀

Some of us on a CKD diet try to limit the amount of acidic foods we consume. I can't remember the source of the following quote, but if I find it, I'll report back.

"The pH of carbonated water is 3–4, which means it's slightly acidic. However, drinking an acidic beverage like carbonated water does not make your body more acidic. Your kidneys and lungs remove excess carbon dioxide. "

It sounds like carbonation will make my kidneys work harder. It's not worth it to me.

I really like carbonated water myself, but as I get older the extra "gas" becomes enough of an issue to do without it for the most part. "Old Fart" is an actual stage of life. Who knew? Garbage or not, I do like a nasty ole Dr Pepper every few months for special occasions :-)

Plain Carbonated water is good for CKD as it turns basic. Also a good idea to add pure lemon juice for taste as it also converts to alkaline pH although you would think it’ would remain acidic. It’d good to maintain an alkaline diet. So if you order carbonated water at a restaurant such as seltzer, also ask for wedges of lemon
