HI Itzmich,

Yes, baking soda is often PRESCRIBED for a condition for patients with CKD. However, just taking it without your doctor knowing is not advised.

I am on a prescription for sodium citrate. I was on a prescription tablets that were a measured amount of baking soda but I did not tolerate it. So hence, the solution was the liquid sodium citrate.

My situation is I had very high uric acid. This situation was not based on my diet but because of a medical condition: Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA). My blood acid levels were almost 12 at one point. They are normal now but I take this solution every night. I still have CKD stage four.

My diet has always been mostly vegetarian and I still had this complication. The uric acid formed stones and lesions within the kidneys damaging them, along with medications I was on for the PsA.

Baking soda does not cure in anyway CKD. If you are looking for more information on using baking soda, you must speak with your doctor because everyone is different. What might work for one, may not for another.

Does the sodium bicarbonate help with high uric acid levels?

Please note that your Meat Comment is not accurate for all stages of CKD. My daughter has Goodpasture Syndrome & stage 5 CKD so she needs to make sure that she eats more meats & protein than someone with a lesser stage.

I took it for awhile until my kidneys got a little better. It gave me hella heartburn. I hope I never have to take it again.

Um, it's sodium bicarbonate. Would be bad for kidney, I'd think.

My nephrologist gave me a prescription for sodium bicarbonate 650 mg two tabs twice a day. I am in stage 4 and my creatinin came down 1 and 1/2 points after the first month. He explained that changing the pH of my blood would make it easier for the glomerulus to get rid of acids in my blood. I have been on sodium bicarbonate for 4 months now. By the way sodium bicarbonate goes by several names: bicarbonate of soda and baking soda. It is used in cookies and cakes to "raise" or put air holes in baked goods. It increases my blood pressure because of the sodium unless I drink plenty of water daily. I stay away from cookies and cakes and eat yeast "raised" based baked goods. By the way sodium bicarbonate is used in french frying chicken and fish to make the outside crust 3 times bigger than normal, like at Long John Silver's or Colonel Sander's. This called hidden sodium because you do not taste it as being salty. If you ever buy fish at Long John Silver's take the breading off and see how much fish there is compared to the breading.

I take sodium bicarbonate. 3 tabs (650mg ea) and my levels are still low. (Perscribed by nephrologist). They are talking about upping my dosage again. It helps counter the acidity levels in your blood. I am stage 5 on PD

Hi Itzmich. My Dr has be taking Sodium Bicarbonate pills which are equivalent to baking soda. I take two pills three times a day. At first I couldn’t remember to take them. However now if I don’t take them I instantly feel the difference.
