Guessing that years of ingesting diet soda (2 cans/day) and Splenda in my coffee has contributed greatly for my CKD. Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

Diet Soda and Slpenda
Interesting, but I never heard about artificial sweeteners causing CKD. Hopefully not.
Thanks for the reply. I notice you are a follow pickleball player as I play 6-7 days a week and love the game. So good luck with pickleball. Having my first appointment with a nepharologist on AUG. 1. We all need to be very proactive re our condition and the diet we all must follow. Have your numbers stableized or improved since being on the new diet? Thanks , Simaron
I play pickleball 3x a week and absolutely love it! My numbers have improved since starting the renal diet last August. My egfr went from 47 to 52. I lost weight on the diet also. I was 125 and now I'm 115. I'm 4' 11" so that's a good weight for me. Trying to maintain now and not lose anymore.
Hi Simaron - I don't know specifically if those sweeteners caused damage, but my nephrologist told me that only Truvia or Stevia are safe (I'm at Stage 3b CKD).
Thanks for reply. I agree that Stevia and Truvia are ok to have. Aspartame is in most diet sodas and splenda uses sucrolose. Do you know which is better, Cranberry Juice coctail or straight Cranberry juice ? This is all new to me but assume I need a really good dietitian to help me navigate. Trying to get up to speed fast. Thanks
I'm no expert but have read that products that use stevia are better. The Davila web site has dietary information related to this that may be of some help. Plus you can message their dietitians. I think you can also set an appointment with a dietician affiliated with NKF.

Me too
I didn't know about Truvia.
I have used Stevia for years.
I just read up on the 2 products and they are not exactly the same. Stevia is derived from the stevia plant and Truvia is as well but it seems that the derivation is different ( Truvia has rebaudioside A) . Both were recommended to me by my kidney dietician and I have had no reaction or deterioration of my lab values.
There's a low carb, low calorie soda that uses stevia. I don't buy the cola flavor but I do like the black cherry and the lemon lime. The grapefruit isn't bad either. The soda is called Zevia. It's innthe health food section of my grocery store. You can also find it a good coop stores or places like Sprouts. It seems to be okey to drink when I'd like something other than water.
Thanks for that tip about Zevia. I'll try to find it here locally. What i do sometimes is add about 1/2 unsweetened cranberry juice to 1/2 sparkingly water (selzer water) in a glass that seems to work for me when I want a carbonated beverage.
Sorry - I don't know.
