What is safe to drink, stage 4-25GFR
I drink ginger ale but don’t know if it’s safe or not.
Trying to heal. Also, whole grains and beans OK?
Thank you,
Avenger

Whole grains and beans are usually not recommended for someone with CKD. However, you should direct your question to a Renal Dietitian. Ginger Ale has sugar and as such it's also on the No list. There are sugar free ginger ales on the market but again, speak to a renal dietitian after they have reviewed your lab results.
I drink diet no sugar since I’m a type 2 diabetic
My Nephologist told me to avoid carbonated drinks...Kidneys do not break down whole wheats easily...I was told to eat only white bread and crackers...Beans are full of potassium and if they are canned beans full of salt
Hi Avenger
If you are concerned with phosphorus, my dietician told me to stay away from dark sodas and store bought ice tea because they usually have ingredients/ preservatives that contain phosphorus (eg phosphoric acid). I would look at the ingredients list and see that they don’t mention anything “phosphate” “phosphoric” like.
Milk is a big no-no as it is very high in phosphorus.
Back to ur original question, I do drink diet ginger ale as that doesn’t have the phosphorus issue.
ALL dairy (milk, buttermilk, eggnog, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, sour cream, cream cheese, tofu, cottage cheese etc) products, beans, chili, chocolate, biscuits, pancakes, waffles, cakes, organ meats, dark colas, soy milk, are high in phosphorus and should be limited per your individualized dietary restrictions from your dietitian. Rice milk is a better option. Sodas like orange, gingerale, 7-up, sprite, rootbeer are lower phosphorus drinks. Hope this helps. Blessings
A renal dietician is needed for individual guidance. For me, my dietician has said that morecent research has shown that grains such as oatmeal can be eaten. Apparently recent research has shown that we don’t absorb all the phosphorus in whole grains when we eat them. So although they originally thought oatmeal was a poor choice for persons with CKD, they now realize that it may be an acceptable choice for some with CKD.
I eat a serving of steel cut oatmeal every morning for breakfast. My phosphorus levels fall consistently in the normal range.
The other thing my renal dietician emphasized was that it’s a matter of staying within my daily allowances for potassium, phosphorous, sodium, and so forth. So I can eat a serving of black beans if I wish. I just need to allot for that when setting my meal plan for that day to be sure it doesn’t put me over my daily allowances for potassium, phosphorus and so forth. This is all about eating in moderation and keeping everything balanced.
I, too, have been advised not to drink carbonated beverages. That’s not an issue for me. I only drink water. I’ve recently started drinking water with fresh lemon slices in it. This gives it a slight lemon flavor which is refreshing.

Dark colas are high in phosphorus and should be avoided. Orange sprite ginger ale root beer cream are much lower. It's always a personal choice.
