Anyone have any feed back on using Chitasan... - Kidney Disease
Anyone have any feed back on using Chitasan supplements?
Supplements are usually not well regulated. Be sure to check with your nephrologist before you spend your money.
Dear itzmich,
Can I offer you a Word Of warning..... BE VERY CAREFUL WITH 'SUPPLIMENTS'. Sorry to 'spell it out' so clearly but most are unnecessary, often a waste of money..... a few CAN EVEN BE HARMFUL, to Renal Patients!
So please DO 'Speak' to your Doctors/ Consultants BEFORE you Start Anything. This is, quite apart, from any 'Contaminants'- quite possibly present- in the actual Supplement.
Are All 'supplements' bad? By No means.... If/ when you go onto Dialysis, you will probably be given 'Dialyvit', specifically designed for 'Patients On Dialysis'.
As I said before, be Careful itzmich. Take Care

Precious little money goes toward the research of supplements for ckd and other diseases because there's little profit in it for big pharma. Doesn't mean they don't work and it doesn't mean they do. Only thing you can do is ask your nephrologist and do a ton of research on your own. I wanted to take beet root powder to lower my bp instead of using an ACE or ARB, but my neph explained that the oxalate levels in beet juice will exacerbate my kidney stones. He also said that the nitric oxide response (bp lowering by vasodilating) might be challenging for the kidneys. Beet juice and watermelon both lower my bp significantly due to that nitric oxide response, but I've chosen to stick to watermelon. The only issue with that is keeping an eye on potassium levels. Mine are normal, but I want to keep an eye on it just to be sure. Like I said, you're on your own when it comes to a lot of the supplements out there and your neph might not be up on all of them either. If looking at the medical studies doesn't provide a clear answer, I'd err on the side of caution and avoid. Remember that ALL supplements should be examined within the context of ckd, not as a normal healthy person.
I talked with my Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR), Brittany Sparks, yesterday, about the medical literature on chitasan. She told me, the latest research on chitasan shows that it isn't effective for ckd as the original research indicated. Her website is nutritionbybrittany.com/abo....
