I was on Procrit for whole year and stopped just a little before my transplant from my living donor. For me, iron tablets were not enough. My nephrologist never discussed iron infusions. Good luck!
There can be more than one reason for anemia when you have CKD. Vitamin D deficiency, iron deficiency and then the fact that your kidneys are not sending the message to your bone marrow to replace your red blood cells. Blood tests will show what the cause of your anemia is. You will have to ask your doctor but not everyone can have their anemia treated with iron.
Before my transplant I was also on Procrit. Iron was not the cause of my anemia. I had no side effects and in no time I felt better and had more energy.
Iron stores and hemoglobin work together. One must take both to maintain healthy levels of each. Using only one would defeat the purpose. Been on EPO and iron I.V. and vit D from kidney failure for 20 years.
Blessings
I've gotten severe autoimmune anemia sometimes, and gone on a course of procrit and iron infusions and blood transfusions. I know they worry about blood transfusions because you can develop antibodies to various blood elements, but I never had any side effects at all, just slowly felt better and was able to stop treatment.
Hi newbie1956,Did you start procrit? What is your experience been so far if so?
