How do I safely treat severe Chronic constipation? CKD stage 3.

I've recently learned by accident! that I'm CKD Stage 3. My current problem is Chronic severe constipation from oxycodone. I've been taking it for years for several bad discs in my back, and more back issues.

I'm tapering off of oxy but slow process. I used to use Miralax, very effective but learned it's bad for CKD.

I'm looking for safe, effective laxative. Have tried many natural remedies but they aren't effective.

Can anyone offer help? This is critical as my constipation means buildup of more toxins and my body doesn't need that.

Thx for any help.

Thx for the tip Peggy. I've tried some prescription meds 2 of them and they didn't help.

As I said in my post, I'm tapering off the oxy but it's gonna be at least a few months before I'm off of it.

I'm doing all the right things regarding diet, water fiber etc etc. But when you're on opiates, you can do everything right and still have issues.

Even tapering slowly I'm having withdrawals, they're manageable but still unpleasant.

As I said, I was making it with Miralax but I read many different medical resources that said to avoid it at all costs if you have CKD. That's when all went to hell.

I'll talk to my PCP about the meds you suggested. Hopefully they'll work for me too.

Take care.

Hi CKbeme,

I think you know how bad oxy is for long term use. If you are still taking it, you will continue to have constipation issues. So the issue really is to find relief faster for you from the pain. I am not sure if you have a pain clinic near you but I would ask your doctor. There are alternative medicines such as acupuncture that might provide some relief and having a meditation practice.

Taking laxatives as a regular habit are very bad for CKD too. So your are exchanging one problem for another. Miralax can cause a chemical imbalance and that is why the warning.

Natural ways to help with constipation is to eat more fiber and drink LOTS of water. Not soda or coffee or tea...water. You need to add some form of exercise everyday. I am talking about as simple as just taking a walk. (But if you are on oxy, none of these things will help.)

I would check with your doctor about what to take because we do not know your history. Constipation will add to your pain in your back also. Miralax can be bad for CKD, but in your case if it works, it might be the solution. Its a balancing act. Please check with the doctor.

I basically eat 2 pieces of liquorice a day. Yes it does have high sugar content but compared to some mixtures your doctor may give it is nothing and since doing this I am now regular and I’m on high dose OxyContin. Good luck 😉

Cazzy,

Thanks for sharing your remedy. Sorry I'm slow responding but I can't be on PC or cellphone typing much because it aggravates my back and neck pain.

Licorice... unbelievable. Is that all you do is the licorice?

I take stool softeners nightly, drink gallons of water, walk most days...

I've tried several Natural Remedies and all have failed. Without Miralax I've been forced to use stimulant laxatives. I don't like to use them but haven't found any other solution.

Any more info would be appreciated.

No worries hunny. I went to my local health food shop and bought some natural liquorice. I was in the same predicament you’re in now and thought what have I got to lose. But for me it absolutely worked and obviously drinking loads of water to flush it through. Everyone is different but give it a try I mean you have nothing to lose xxxxx
