Pickled herring is among the fish lowest in potassium, with 59 milligrams per 3-ounce serving. A fillet of ocean perch has 113 milligrams, making it another of your lowest-potassium options. With between 200 and 300 milligrams per serving, haddock, cod, flatfish, pollack, orange roughy and canned light tuna are also good choices for fish low in potassium. (livestrong.com)

Fluid: first of all let’s get clear on what I mean by “fluid” in a renal diet…

Fluid is any of the following drinks (consume): water, herbal teas (e.g. lemon, ginger, berries, rooibos, green tea, Echinacea, plus many more), and vegetable/fruit juices.

Fluid does not mean (avoid): coffee, caffeinated drinks (except green tea), artificially sweetened “sugar-free” drinks, tea, alcohol, cordial, sugary drinks, soda pop, and soft drinks.

The reason I need to stipulate this is because so many people are just drinking the wrong drinks without any “awareness” of what they putting into themselves.

Here are four main reasons why you need to swap what you are drinking:

1. The drinks in the avoid section are directly toxic/unhealthy for the kidneys, especially alcohol, coffee, and artificially sweetened drinks.

2. The drinks in the avoid section actually deplete the body of more fluid than they put in. This is because they act as diuretics, and thus make the body urinate more.

3. The drinks in the avoid section deplete the body of vital nutrients.

4. The drinks in the avoid section cause many more serious health condition if drunk on a regular basis.

Contemplate: The human body is 65-70% water, therefore the fluid you drink, literally becomes you. What are you becoming?

Every person has a limit on what minerals (potassium, protein, phosphorous, calcium and sodium) they must cut back on based on the lab results and your discussions with your doctor(s) and then hopefully a Renal Dietitian to set your individual meal plan. You cannot eliminate all of those minerals because your body has a need for them in moderation. As an example, I am limited to only 8 oz. of protein per day and no red meat. Some folks are capped at lower amounts, some higher. I don't go out to eat any longer because I have no control over the food prep. I do have control about the food prep in my kitchen.

Fluids are anything that you drink and the liquid from the foods you eat. The rule is that while in the early and middle stages of CKD you should keep yourself hydrated. This works for you only if you are not retaining water and/or having issues urinating. If you are having problems then include your Urologist in your Care Team planning. Back to being hydrated. Hydrate with liquids that don't harm your kidney's. Caffeine in coffee is an issue for your kidneys. Just one example. Should you get on dialysis you will likely have to closely monitor all fluid intake so that during hemodialysis you can have "x" amount of fluid drained off without leaving you with pain and cramping.

Like with everything else, the choice is yours. Cut back, watch your lab values, and make adjustments.

Agreed!

Certain foods need to be avoided, but every person is different and has different needs. If one goes on a no carb diet. their body becomes deficient in certain nutrients. It is watching your labs, conferring with your doctor and if possible a dietician to assist you in making healthier choices for the kidney or any other disorder that you may have.

I do eat out, but I make clean choices such as salads with fresh vegetables as onions, red peppers and cucumbers. When available, I order oil and vinegar dressing. I avoid Ranch, Ceasar and Italian dressing as they have outrageous amounts of sodium in them. Any vinaigrette is served on the side.

I ask how the vegetables are prepared before ordering them.

If I eat oatmeal when at a hotel ( and my nephrologist said fine) I have a palm sided amount topped with fresh blueberries and strawberries.

I try to make sensible choices and apply portion control.

LJ thanks for your efforts to put together ideas. I am sure that you worked hard. Your time spent to put this contribution together is appreciated.

Agree with Mr_Kidney. Diet needs are individual - i.e. what one person needs may be very different from what another person needs, even if they are in the same stage of CKD. It is important you talk with a dietitian or your nephrologist.

Thanks guys. The reason I did this research for myself from many different sources was so I could know how much potassium & phosphorus was in the foods I like. Was trying to be helpful as there must be other people who would like to know these stats about some of their favourite healthy foods.

Hello - your research is a valuable tool !!! Thank you !!

KelliC_NKF profile image
KelliC_NKF in reply to LJMusgrove

it's wonderful that you are so involved in your healthcare and do research on your own! It's also important to talk with your doctor or a dietitian, since everyone's needs are different. Most people in stage 3 do not need to limit potassium and phosphorus. A healthy, balanced diet that is low in salt and protein are key factors. Avoiding processed foods, choosing fresh fruits and vegetables instead is also important. For example the DASH diet is often recommended: kidney.org/atoz/content/Das...
