Help!

Hi everyone, I've just joined you today because I'm so desperate to lose weight, the correct way.

I have around 5 stone to lose, I have a good appetite, I don't have a sweet tooth but do love crisps.

I have a underactive thyroid and polycystic ovarian syndrome

I hope the ideal diet would be potatoes and grilled meat or fish with lots of veg, but i guess not.

If you have any advice at all (that does not include giving up the crisps all together ha ha) I would really appreciate it

Hi Hidden

Welcome to the weight loss forum.

Take a look at the Welcome Newbie post in the Pinned post section at the right hand side or at the bottom if your on a mobile. Have a look at the nhs 12 week plan, many members have had success following this plan. Use the BMI checker to work out your daily calorie allowance.

Have a look at the Daily Diary which you can find on the Home page in Events. It is where all the members are sharing their daily plans on what they are eating and any exercise they are doing. This thread will give you some ideas on how to start.

Below the Pinned posts are the Topics where members share a range of weight related subjects.

Take your measurements at the start together with a photo so you can see the changes on the days the scales don't move.

We have daily weigh ins so why not come along and join us today. You can find the weigh ins on the Home page in the Events section on the right. Just click on the post in Events and record your start weight and any loss/gain or maintain for the week.

To get the most of the forum be active, share tips, recipes and experiences. Read some of the posts they are very motivating.

Have a good first week.

Rose

Thank you so much for the great advice. I am looking forward to finding my way around the site and getting to know you all. I can see it is going to take time but I'm not in a rush.

Gain information and lose weight... sounds like a plan to me!

Hi S4r4,

just to let you know I was in your situation this time last year and that it can be done!

I know you have it tough with your various health problems, but I would think there is no need to give up your beloved crisps unless you are totally addicted to the things and scoff multipacks on a regular basis. If that is the case I would probably go cold turkey (I had to totally cut out added sugar because I couldn't have "just a bit"). Instead perhaps limit crisps to two or three times a week or try some of the lovely Tesco veg crisps or apple crisps which are a bit healthier than salty potato kinds.

The meat and loads of veg sound absolutely ideal. I found it necessary to drastically cut down on the portion sizes of all things including foods related to potatoes and bread and switched to sweet potato most of the time. I've definitely dramatically increased the amount of veg and salad I eat (about 2-3 portions with every meal and 2-3 pieces of fruit daily) and this means I feel full and so it's easier to resist the naughty stuff and don't feel the need to snack nowadays.

We're all different and what suits one person may not suit another so read plenty of posts for ideas and experiment a bit. I'd recommend the NHS BMI calculator to find out your suggested calorie allowance for your age and activity level. It's often more than you would think and believe me, it does work. The best thing is, the weight comes off just as quickly as on a really low calorie diet but is much easier to sustain over the long term.

Good luck x

Thank you so much for the idea about the crisps, I do love them but it's a weekend sort of thing. You have given me so many ideas to look into and I no longer feel alone.Go

I'm now looking forward to being slim again

I think it's the advice to stick with, one step at all time.

Sometimes the obvious isn't always obvious!

Thanks
