Reducing carbs

I'm looking to reduce carbs in my diet, but what do I add to 40g of porridge so I'm not hungry? I usually have about 70 grams but think this could be too carby, plus I eat white potatoes, rice, pasta etc

Hi. I have cut out all pasta, bread, potatoes but you could start by only eating brown rice, pasta, bread. I am told the nutritional content of white stuff is very poor. I get energy from protein and fat like lean meat. Good luck

hi PheonixJo, if you are looking to reduce carbs then cutting out potatoes, rice, pasta, bread and oat porridge is a fairly standard way of getting rid of them. Here is a coconut porridge recipe dietdoctor.com/recipes/coco... that is only 4g of carbs per serving, and if you have to have bread then Hi-Lo which you can buy at Sainsbury's has 5g per slice - the diet doctor link above has many low carb recipes and i hope you find some that appeal to you

Carbs are in so much foods use mfp add your own food for 2 months using the packs that's have the cals fats carbs etc on the side or scan them in as member ass things wrongly easily done that way you know you've an own data base of exact quanties

Milk has carbs some have less carbs like skimmed almond coconut

Get the calorie carb fat bible about £15 on ebay 2016 will help

Carbs do make us hungry but don't not have good carbs I'm aiming at 80 grams carbs a day 1500 calories at 200 lbs as that's best for me

Look into mfp community search posts about TDEE and bmr and carb intake

i have reduced my carbs to under 20g a day most of those from vegetables, so i have cream in my coffee, but as i am also doing intermittent fasting (one meal a day) and sometimes extended fasting, i obviously stay in ketosis all the time, however it takes around 6 weeks to become 'fat adapated' ie you only burn your fat for energy, so at that stage lowering the amount of fat you eat but still eating to satiety helps to continue to take the weight off.

I was in ketosis and got really ill last year I'll never go down that route again

I wish you lots success but had 3 doctors tell me it's not a good thing to put your body through long term 4 months messed mine up tbh I know long term I can't survive on no carbs and I can't have cream as intolerant

Each to they're own I got sick as 6 months prior to starting I was seriously ill sepsis and a blood transfusions with an intensive care stay this has made me see life's too short to deprive any food groups and ketosis isn't nice x

Urrgh Lawman what a terrible time you had - sorry to hear all that and i hope you are much better now.

I appreciate that ketosis is not for everyone, but as someone who has a savoury and not a sweet tooth it suits me down to the ground, but i also think that the fasting i do suits me very well too, my hair is better than it has been for years, my nails are amazing, my skin is 100% improved (although that could be the coconut oil). We are all different and what works for one person will not work for another, so the best advice i would ever give someone is whatever it is that works for you, whatever you feel you can live with year on year and not just to lose weight, what makes you happy and healthy - i have found that i no longer have joint pain in my shoulder and i think that is because my overall inflammation is healing up. I hope you stay happy and healthy.

I totally agree it was hard for me as I have a family to look after who won't eat virtually no carbs and tbh your not allowed to do keto if your under 18 certain health problems so I take it if that's the case it's not exactly safe

I think as I nearly died in 2015 lost my baby at 5 months pregnant now aged 47 having 'dieted' my whole adult life cutting out food groups and feeling deprived I'm at the point of be healthy lose weight safely & be happy

Keto made me very miserable I do agree carbs need reducing but I'd rather eat 80 g carbs a day and feel happy :)

I'm glad youve found a plan that works but keto isn't advised long term along with hairloss bad breath period problems it can give you gallstones I hope you stay well & healthy and super well done on your life plan :)

I'm no expert, but the majority of calories surely come with the porridge, so apart from some kind of fruit for decoration or maybe a drizzle of honey, I wouldn't think you'd need to add anything further. And you do get used to the reduction of cals, just try sticking with it for a while.

yes, funnily enough I did - I used to be a kinda "no meat" person, not veggie, just preferred not eating meat. However, when I started the calorie counting I decided to introduce meat (and fish) so that I got a proper balanced diet. Previously I'd make the excuse "oh, it's only vegetables" and fill my plate to near overflowing! I'd cook a meal for 4 and we'd share it between 2. Now I find myself plating up and thinking.... "oooo, that looks a lot". So yes, I am surprised by how I have changed my eating habits. I don't die of starvation after a smaller portion.... I thought I would! I have some homemade yoghurt in the fridge and if ever I do think I'm a bit peckish after my dinner, I'll have half a banana and a dollop of yoghurt - but honest, I don't need this.

I have 30g of dry oats and mix it with 100g of 'Alpro Go On' which is high in protein and keeps me full until lunch time, give it a try 😉

Hi. I am a porridge fan! I use the whole/jumbo size oats, not the fine ground type. I soak about 30gm in cold water for ten minutes. Sometimes add home stewed Apple, frozen in ice cube trays. Microwave for 2 1/2 mins, stir in one teaspoon of Creme fraiche and one teaspoon of honey or fruit based sweetener. It's nice and creamy and very filling. I do not use any "low fat" dairy products.

Number 2 target achieved today as I am officially "healthy" according to BMI ! Going well! Set another target today of another 4lb loss in next 5 weeks. Onwards and downwards!

I have 30g of oats with one chopped up dried apricot and one chopped up Brazil nut. I put milk on them in the evening and eat them the next morning. Delicious quick and easy breakfast! I don't do this day by day, I make up a big batch and then portion it out.
