Hi I just signed up for some tips. I'm 52 and going through the change and have gained weight. I haven't got the first clue about where to start with diet and calories etc. Could I get few tips please? Thank you

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), read the Welcome Newbie thread first and move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you :)

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news :)

Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate :)

We run daily weigh-in's and you would be very welcome to join today's, or any other, bar Monday and Tuesday, which are unfortunately full. The threads can always be found in the Events section, to the right of the home page, bottom on a mobile.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too :)

Welcome to the forum 😊 Weight loss can be more difficult as we get older, but not impossible 😊 I have found the dietary changes helped the symptoms, esprcially lower sugar and carbohydrates, more fruit and veg and extra exercise 😊 Have a good look around the site and ask if you have any questions

I started here on 2nd Jan. I am similar age to you and I'm loving the Mediterranean diet. I've cut out sugar, careful not to eat too much fruit.

So I fill up on lean meat and fish, lots of vegetables but mostly ones grown above the ground, salad, few nuts and eggs.

It may sound limited - it's not. Hummus is my go to treat.

I stay away from bread...if I eat 1 slice I follow it with 3 more.

It's a little bit trial and error when you start up if you write everything down and it works stick to it if not change what you eat.

Oh top tip .. Move as much as possible !

hi Donnasmum Im also new here. I started by checking my BMI on the NHS lose weight page, this will tell you how many calories you can eat, it will give you a low end and high end, I have 5 stone to lose so have started on 1400 cals a day, which is more than I was eating and have lost 2lbs this week. I also write everything I eat down in a journey and write down any exercise I do. I find writing everything down really helps and saves time on days I'm busy as I can look back at a good day and just repeat it if necessary.

This is a very friendly forum with lots of support given, keep posting and good luck.

Just wanted to add to the other responses that menopause should not make any significant difference to your ability to lose weight, so take no notice of anyone who suggests you can't do anything about it. It;s the same for everyone - control your portions, cut your calorie intake and you will lose weight. I lost 2.5 stones while going through menopause, by eating properly and going to the gym (a lot!), and I lost it at a rate of 1.5lbs to 2lbs a week, which was the same rate of loss as when I was in my 20s. I found the diet and lots of exercise together worked very well for me, although portion control was the most important to actually shift weight.

It's also worth upping your activity levels and exercise as much as you can - apart from shifting a few more cals, it fills in time that you might otherwise spend with your hand in the biscuit tin, and it is also extremely good for all us over 50s if we want to stay fit and well in later life.

You could try joining a gym and getting a programme worked out for you. If you go during the day, you;ll find it's full of the over 50s getting fit, not too many lycra lovelies at that time of day to put you off!

And/or walk everywhere, and/or take up a sport like golf, tennis, swimming etc. something you enjoy enough to do for it;s own sake.
