Resisting buying chocolate
hello and warm welcome to this forum. Thanks for sharing, it can certainly be very difficult to control these impulses... For me it helps a bit when I start talking to myself as if I were talking to a small child who needs to be taught to make the right choices, with love and understanding, but also putting down firm boundaries. I also know that with time those cravings become easier to cope with. Planning food in advance is also helpful for many people - not so much for me personally, I have to admit... but what helped me was to record every little thing I was putting in my mouth. Sometimes I would even decide not to eat an extra piece of food, because I could not be bothered to record it I hope you will find what works best for you and in the meantime I hope to see you around on the forum, actively joining in with our threads and events.

Hi purplenuz and welcome . Up to June 2022 I was a fellow chocolate "addict" I was crunching through nearly 1Kg a month. Whenever I went shopping I bought a 250g bar of 70% cocoa chocolate. I was eating a square ( +/-27g) after every meal. One of our hosts , jennilou , organised a "cut down, cut out " challenge, I managed to cut out chocolate for ever. It's definitely a kind of addiction so it's easier not to eat/buy any at all than to try to eat less. My focus was also on my teeth, what's the point of enjoying a square of delicious, dark chocolate if we have to clean our teeth afterwards.
My suggestion is that you try to focus on the advantages of not eating chocolate, you could put the money that you save away for a special treat. Think of how much a trip to the dentist's costs.
Good luck 🍀
Hi,
I buy really good quality chocolate covered Brazil nuts and treat myself to one per day to help me manage my chocolate addiction. I am having something healthy in the nut, but it does satisfy my compulsion for chocolate too.
The main disadvantage is that you have to buy a bag unfortunately, and the danger zone is opening a new bag and gobbling the lot, but I only ever buy two bags per month (about 14 in a bag) so, if I do this I go a fortnight without any and I don’t want to do that, so I have been much better at not doing the gobbling the lot recently. This works for me anyway.
We are coming up to a tough weekend for chocolate addicts - hopefully you can keep your consumption at a moderate level.
Good luck x
Hello purplesnuz and yes, I used to have chocolate in the house all the time. It was my little "pick-me-up" when I felt tired, but often that was every day! The solution for me was to find other foods which were little treats but with less sugar and fewer calories. I found Alpro chocolate desserts for example. They taste really chocolatey and creamy, but they are much healthier. I hope you find a solution - good luck!

Hiya. It takes practice and lots of it, to make the choice not to buy it. But it is a choice and that's where the hope and power are. When I see it in the shops, I literally say out loud, 'nope, I am not buying you today' 😀 with practice and remembering that everything we consume is through choice, it works. All the very best
Easter time makes even harder but what I do is I buy a chocolate block and I have three squares one day. I choose plain because it' is slightly bitter . I would rather buy chocolate in controlled circumstances than to and do so when I'm weaning for the sugar I think I might have some insulin resistance.
HiyaI put my chocolate in the freezer and just have a bit at a time.
For my birthday I was given 3 boxes of chocolates most are still in the freezer.
My treat / low cal hot choc drink twice a week made with boiling hot water . Sip and enjoy. Why cut all out and if I don’t buy it I can’t eat it but as a lifestyle I have moderation . Yes - aim to cut out but if this is your way of staying motivated then I think little and less often is sometimes the best . Cut out all and I would easily relapse.
If I popped into the shops for a few bits I used to always get myself a bar of chocolate, and then eat most of it in the car on the way home! Now if I'm feeling like that I treat myself to something else. Usually a small punnet of cherries or rasps (we were never allowed those as kids as they're too pricey but it makes it feel like a massive treat!). After doing this a while it's rare I get the urge to buy chocolate anymore, but if I do a healthy treat option usually does the trick!
Our local co-op makes you walk down the choc aisle to get to the till which is also super annoying as you can't just avoid it altogether!
