Hi everyone,

This is the Afternoon/Evening Session of the Fab 5'ers Monday group weigh-in, so please post in this thread if you're weighing in with us this afternoon and/or this evening!

The Morning Session has gone really well, and please have a look at the thread if you want to catch up with how everyone is doing there:

To all you Afternoon and/or Evening Monday group weighers - I wish you an enjoyable weigh-in. One of the Fab 5'ers (Prin, Suzybenj, Ruth_Canal_Runner, Moreless and myself, Lowcal) will ensure we respond to you. But please be patient with us, as we do have other commitments and might not be able to reply straight away (particularly around lunchtime). By the end of the day, everyone will have received a response from one or more of us.

The stats for last week were compiled by me, and are as follows:

Total people posting on last Monday's thread: 136.

Total overall weight lost: 149.4 pounds (67.8 kilos).

Total people who lost weight: 87 (165.9 pounds lost) (75.25 kilos).

Total people who gained weight: 17 (16.5 pounds gained) (7.5 kilos).

Total people who maintained their weight: 18.

Total people starting out on their weight loss journey/plan: 12.

Total people who didn't disclose their weight gain/loss: 2.

Regarding my own weigh-in, last Monday I weighed 13 stone 1.8 pounds, and today I weigh 13 stone 2.2 pounds, so I've gained 0.4 pound this week. I put this slight gain down to the fact I had a large Sunday lunch yesterday. I'm hoping to lose 2 pounds this week, and I've pledged to try to do more strength exercises (squats, press-ups etc) and also attend the gym 3 times this week on top of walks. I've just got back from the gym now, so feeling good to have completed one session successfully!

If you're new, and this is your first Monday group weigh-in, then please introduce yourself, and share your starting weight (if you feel comfortable to do so) and your initial weight loss goals - setting yourself mini-goals leading to your ultimate weight loss goal is particularly helpful. You could also make a note of your body measurements - sometimes the scales stick at a particular weight, or even increase slightly, yet the body measurements can have changed for the better, and that's very motivating. That happened to me as I did my measurements today and found I'd lost an inch from my waist and an inch from my chest, since I last measured them before Christmas, so although I gained 0.4 pound, I have reduced my body measurements. That feels good, and motivates me to keep going. :-)

You can always refer to pervious weigh-in threads if you want to see what other people typically post (just click on my post, Lowcal, and you'll be able to see a list of all previous posts, which are all clearly dated).

I've stayed the same weight this week 15st 12ibs. I kept to my food diary for half a week only. Not able to exercise as my asthma has flared up and I have been taking oral steroids. Still onwards and downwards as someone wrote last week.

I really feel for you. Exercise and asthma really do not work well together. Hopefully it will settle down quickly and you can get back to exercise. Hopefully you can keep to your food diary and still make progress this week.

Moreless, well done on maintaining, with all the exercise and muscle building your body has to get a chance to catch up with you 😏

Due to not eating much since Friday, my 'cheated' loss is - 3 lbs, down to 191 lbs 😊 I expect some to go back, but I've not been that close to the 180's before.

Reading everyone's post on the morning post made me realise that I CAN and I WILL get that fight back !!!! 189 - watch out, I'm on my way ⚠❗

Hi. I'm happy to say that I have finally lost a little weight. 400gr. That is almost a pound. Keep trying. I will keep trying. And thanks for the support. Weighing 67k now..

You have lost more than a standard 250g pack of butter - very well done, keep on going! :-)

4lb gain. Not even bothering with excuses as I am sure eating 3 doughnuts may have had something to do with it.

I'm really sorry Pilpala, but you did make me laugh with your doughnut statement! I do not, however, think it even remotely amusing that you gained 4lbs! :(

Not to worry, what's done is done, you're a real trouper for confessing your sins and jumping right back on the bandwagon :)

I'm willing to bet that a doughnut free week will put paid to, if not all, at least some of those pesky pounds :)

Sorry about that gain - I do agree with you though...bakeries in general are totally evil, their array of wonderful smells are designed to tempt us all to lose pounds from our pockets and gain pounds on our hips!

Quite a while back I decided to deliberately mis-pronounce the word "doughnuts". I say the "dough" part so that it rhymes with "rough". Hence, they become "duff-nuts" lol, it really makes me think twice about wanting to eat any! :-D

Lost a mere 3/8lb as I cheated Saturday with chocolate cake and too much bread.I need to be serious 7 days a week.At least it's still in the right direction.

You can have treats, but you need to count them into your calorie allowance and then there's no cheating involved at all :)

Hi John,

Congratulations on losing 0.375 pound this week, despite wrestling with a Chocolate Cake on Saturday and too much bread.

Personally speaking, to be 'serious' 7 days a week may actually have the potential of being too restrictive - maybe you could continue to allow yourself the occasional indulgence, but plan it in as part of your weekly plan? - i.e. I tend to allow myself 1 packet of crisps on the weekend - and I also had a chocolate eclair this weekend as well - knowing that I was having those things helped me to get through the week without feeling deprived, although to be honest I found it was relatively easy as I try to always ensure I have a balanced meal and balanced snacks, so that I don't allow myself to ever get too hungry or feel deprived. That's when things can go wrong, and you can end up eating to excess or feeling out of control.

I think you're doing really well, so keep going, and wishing you another great week ahead.

If there's any chocolate cake left - then maybe cut it into portions and freeze it so it's out of the way.

Hi sounds like a fabulous treat! I try to take a good walk when I want to cheat to burn the calories first! It doesn't always work though

I'm with Lowcal on this one...I allow myself a 100 cal snack every evening (I'm calorie counting) and it's just planned as part of my day because evenings were always my worst time for any indulgent or comfort eating really. So I know I have that last little bit to look forward to every day, to get me through the evening. It has really helped me tremendously. I feel we have to have a sustainable method and I really feel I could actually stick with this for the rest of my life (given the odd emotional wobble though, and I've had a few of those since I started in September, believe me!).

If you feel the food calling, drop by the site and put out a help post...invite someone to talk you out of it. You may find, like I did, just being here typing is a good distraction from eating...you have to reply to everyone instead of raiding the kitchen - lol!

As you say, you are doing in the right direction, downwards, so it's all good. One of the biggest things I've done so far on my journey is recognise and admit my various episodes of falling off the wagon. If you can devise a strategy to avoid that "disaster" the next time, then the temporary glitch was worth it because it's helping you to learn from the experience - that's my theory. I think I am starting to know myself, my triggers, my "no go" foods, better and better the longer I do this.

Ww I totally agree with you it needs to be a plan for life with nothing off limits otherwise it's not sustainable, I don't really denim myself things I think how much I want it so tonight I traded butter on my jacket potato for a shortbread biscuit mmmmm......

I've stayed the same this week and have another big party weekend coming up next week (50th and the rugby in Dublin!) so fingers crossed I can at least stay the same again next week!

Hello everyone, I'm new, I put on about 3 stone in the last year and a half after going back to work full time, no more long dog walks during the day! just sat in an office. I have recently been diagnosed with Diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease so still getting used to what I can and cant eat. My weight today is 14st.3lb which is horrendous as my ideal weight is about 11st 7lb. However I was weighed at the hospital on 7th January and I was 14st 9lb then so today I am quite happy as its another couple off since last week. I shall continue to 'attempt' to be more healthy till I get back to where I need to be..... hopefully. :o)

A very warm welcome to you, and thanks for joining us for this Monday group weigh-in. I know you've recently had the diagnosis of Diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease, and that you're trying to come to terms with what you can and can't eat - I hope your health care providers have given you lots of advice and help with that.

Thank you for sharing your starting weight, and I know you described it as horrendous, but that's probably more due to your shock of being overweight and having to share that publicly - not something we often do, so thanks for being brave and sharing it with us. I was 18 stone 8 pounds at my heaviest, and I really didn't like people to know how much I weighed. Hopefully your weight today will be the highest it will be, and you'll be looking forward to being in the 13's very soon. You've already lost a couple of pounds since last week, and a total of 6 pounds since you were weighed at the hospital on 7th January, so you're already making excellent progress. Congratulations and really well done. If you don't mind, as you've lost 2 pounds last week, we can already add that to the weekly stats - as you're already on the weight loss journey, and doing really well. :-) It would be great to include your results, rather than count you as a complete newbie.

Most of us are using the NHS 12 week plan, so it's definitely worth a look, if you've not seen it. Useful to also use an app to help you track your food and drink intake - and something like Myfitnesspal is a good one - free and easy to use.

Sympathise with getting used to what you can and can't eat. It took me a while to get my head around it and adapt recipes but it was well worth it in the end as I am now pain free and able to think about weight loss. Keep working through it gets easier.

I've lost 1lb making me 13:7,I've been ill all week so not been sticking to the diet 100% so I'm happy to be back on track and only got 3lbs till i have an overweight bmi!

Congratulations to you for losing 1 pound - I am so sorry however to hear that you've been ill all week - I hope you are beginning to feel better and that you'll be on the mend very soon.

You mention being back on track, and that is great - but take it easy and don't overdo things. You need to ensure you are properly better, and your health is the most important thing.

Great to hear you've only got 3 pounds to go to get into the next BMI range. That's brilliant!

Hi having had a good week off its now time to get my head around losing some weight. My plan is to do it slowly so I can hopefully change my eating habits for the long term. Since try losing weight two years ago I have regained some of it. I am not surprised as life has not been plain sailing. Now I am coping well with my low Fodmap diet weight loss should be easier. However there is quite a restriction on the fruit and veg I can eat without pain! I am determined to over come this. So here goes!

Starting weight on wed Jan 13th. 14stone 3lb

Mon Jan 18th 14stone

Mon Jan 25th. 14 stone

Mon Feb 2nd. 14 stone

Pleased with having lost 3lb then maintaining whilst having my week break. My aim now is to lose 1lb a week and to reach 13stone 7lb. Then I will reset my target. Long term goal would be to get to 12stone and then reassess how I feel.

My goodness Pog, it sounds as if you've put a lot of thought into your plan of action. I'm very impressed with your calm and sensible approach to your new healthy lifestyle. I confess to knowing very little about a low fodmap diet, so must do some reading up :)

Your short, medium and long term goals seem infinitely doable, so all the best to you and looking forward to seeing how you get on this week :)

its been this way for a couple of weeks so as posted this week I asked for some advice I've had a couple of days of binging and will crack back down to it this week and see if it starts again! :)

It wasn't all that serious...! There was some slacking involved and some ill-advised attempts to do floor-based exercises in jeans resulting in a bruise where my belt dug in - shambolic might be a better description! But I'd definitely still recommend strength exercises for getting pounds shifting close to goal :)

I've generally been slow to catch up with the whole sportswear thing. I went for my first couch to 5k run wearing an old cardigan and some converses with holes in :) Considering the amount of exercise I do I still have very few items of proper kit! I guess you don't necessarily need top to toe lycra to get started - in fact I'm not sure I have any lycra at all... but I do have running shoes now and I use a roll-up mat for floor exercises these days :)

Afternoon I've been a naughty girl and put on a pound. I still am coughing all the while and it's getting me down and I've been very much comfort eating. Watching various sugar free farm, trust me etc is the chocolate, rose wine, sugar, sugar, sugar stopping me from getting better? So for my comfort eating today I'm having some porridge and nuts, and walked away from the yummies in Aldi! I am going to experiment on myself this week! On a plus point, I am starting a fitness plan. I have signed up for a fun run in 124 days time. So tonight my friend's mini Shetland and I are running and walking for 12 minutes! We're going for kill or cure and tbh both Eddie and I need to tone up with a goal so that's it!! Am off to make my porridge now and am staying away from the sugar!!!

That was quite amusing Maxine, I just sat back while you talked yourself into a solution to your problem :)

I'm sure that once you're feeling 100%, sticking to a healthy eating plan and getting enough exercise will be easy peasy :)

Good luck with getting stuck in and with the practice for the fun run, although I'm not sure that fun and run actually go together :)

Aw bless you, you have been dogged with this germ too haven't you? We seemed to be ill for about a month and it was so tiring and SO boring, it gets old very quickly doesn't it! I've just about gotten over it now, and despite a couple of food hiccups this week, I managed to lose 2 pounds. I'm not trying to blow my own trumpet or anything, but I honestly believe that being ill didn't help my system much at all. So hopefully you might see a shift in the right direction once you start to feel better. Maybe your body is just trying to get better rather than burn any fat, or something like that?

The more I think about this, the more I am starting to become a firm believer in food as potential medicine. I made up that batch of veggie soup when I was poorly, and I stuffed in eggs, salad, veggies, a good variety of food I knew was essentially good for me. So, although you may not feel like it because you're poorly, you might find that if you can manage to summon the energy to make the switch over to a few more veggies and a bit less sugar etc, you might start to feel a bit better. I was listening to a video on youtube yesterday by a chiropractor and he was saying, he believes, all the toxic stuff we put in our bodies, he views it as a "stressor" on the nervous system and the nervous system affects the whole body and wellbeing. I suppose he could have a point really. If the body is busy trying to eliminate toxins we are putting in like sugar, additives, maybe over the counter drugs, etc, etc, maybe it is having to work extra hard to get well, so if we get rid of the toxin input, it might give the body less work to do so it can concentrate on getting better? I know I'm rambling, but tbh I'm actually exploring his ideas as I type, so it's kind of a "thinking out loud ramble" lol. :-D

Thank you you've made me feel there's light at the end of the tunnel if you're getting better. This is the start of the 4th week of me coughing so if yours lasted a month, I will feel better next Monday! I am really going to be mindful of all I eat this week. Not calorie counting but giving my poor cough wracked body some good nutrition! I have had a Ribena today which has sugar in but also lots of vitamin C but it was yummy and made me happy, so I'm going to go with that! It is true that how is my body to get me healthy again if I fill it with toxins from chocolate cookies and rose wine. I do cook everything from scratch for my 'proper' meals but my snacks are very naughty. I do feel rather stonking for having my fruit, nuts and seeds snack pot with my porridge just. I can feel that goji berry wreaking havoc on the cough germ already!

Hi Lowcal, don't worry about that 0.4...I reckon it's purely that your lunch hasn't completely been digested yet! I'm sure it will even itself out with no problems.

I'm somewhat mystified as to what's happened this week. I thought I had overdone things a bit with the take away and the meal out on Saturday, complete with chocolate torte. Imagine my surprise when I stepped on the scales and found that I actually LOST 2 pounds this week. How very weird!

I am finally rid of that nasty germ and I have taken a few less painkillers this week, so I'm wondering if that had some effect on getting the scales moving again...quite possibly, I suppose. Or maybe I had gone just that little bit under the calories and it caused things to slow. Oh well, I will stick at the same calories this week and see what happens next week eh!

I am absolutely thrilled that you decided to join us today, because I know you weren't necessarily going to do so - infact I was thinking about you this morning whilst I was in the gym, and I was thinking 'I really hope WeightWarrior will pop in' to the weigh-in group today. I am so happy to see you! :-)

I was NOT expecting to hear you'd lost 2 pounds today - because you had convinced me that you would be likely to have gained weight today - so that is another great bonus - and another reason to feel fantastic - many Congratulations on losing 2 pounds. It shows you can have a take-away and a meal out and still lose weight.

So glad to hear that you've got rid of that nasty germ, and that you're able to take less painkillers as a result. We did talk previously about the potential side-effects of painkillers in terms of inflammation etc - especially the ibuprofen - I think that was the one that had it listed as a potential side-effect, but I'm going by my memory now, and it's not always reliable!

Whatever the reason for your weight loss, I hope you celebrate and enjoy the fact you've lost - it is a great result, and I wish you another great week ahead.

I can't quite believe it myself lol, I hadn't stepped on the scales all week because I was afraid to. I had also convinced myself that I had done badly this week, I just felt really bloated and was sure it was gonna be a gain! Very nice surprise, I have to say. You might not have seen me today if I had gained lol, so I'm glad I bit the bullet and jumped on the scales. I keep learning the lesson that I just need to persevere and keep going and stop developing so much anxiety about it all, just keep the faith that long term results will all even out. Easier said than done, I still lapse into that anxious state from time to time! Thanks for your kind words, and yes, I'm sure I remember someone else saying ibuprofen caused their feet to swell so I think you have remembered perfectly right.

I just wanted to add that if there's another occasion where you do end up gaining weight, then you also have the option to merely pop in and talk about how the week had gone, but not actually disclose your weight - this weigh-in group is essentially about supporting one another - and I would hate for anyone to feel they didn't want to come here because of having to disclose a weight gain, so that is always optional - so please, do consider that on another occasion, as we'd rather see you than miss you.

Essentially, you choose what you do, but I'd like to encourage you to still engage with us even when the going gets tough, as that's often when the group could hopefully come into its own in terms of mutual support. We've all been through those weeks when the results aren't as we'd like.

Thankfully you've had some excellent results this week - and I'm so pleased for you.

Woohoo WW! Maybe you've just got things moving again and you're going to start a regular downward trend :)

Whatever you did this week definitely worked, so I think you're wise to stick with it and see if it works again :)

So glad to hear that you're over that lurgie and that you've been able to reduce your painkillers. Next I'll be hearing that the pedallers come out again! :)

I really hope so, I seem to get quite anxious when things don't go down much for a week or two. Really have to beat that anxiety eh - I worry too much!

I'd like to think that the chocolate torte and take away were responsible for my weight loss but I can't see that being the case, so I won't make them a regular feature lol...I will however keep on with filling up with lots of veggies and hopefully the right fuel helps things along.

It would be nice to have a longer spell with less painkillers, I had a few months where I had just managed to reduce and then I got whacked again with pain and had to increase to tackle it and the comfort eating urge that seems to come with that pain. I just really want to reach an even keel but flare ups seem to come out of nowhere, I really try to think what I did or how they started but can never seem to find a solid reason for it - very frustrating because if I knew, I could prevent them from happening. Ah well, here we go again, fingers crossed for a pain free and possibly pedal filled week lol!

Sorry for your gain although once again your positivity shines through. And also well done for not gaining more than that considering your weekend!

As for me I was weighing 75kg this morning, i.e. a 0.6 pound loss and I have to admit I am seriously puzzled as to why it is not a bigger loss. On Friday I was almost 1kg under that!! Could we move this thread to Friday morning please? Because for the third week in a row I weigh heavier on Monday than I did on Friday!! It frustrates me sooo much!! Due to joining the "Around the world" challenge, this has been my most active week EVER with a smashing total of 339 active minutes!! Also I have been constantly UNDER my goal in calories every single day, which had not happened for some time, not even last week!! I think I need to either look into calorie cycling or look at my actual foods on weekend or something because there is something there that I am not grasping!

In the good news chapter : I did my first ever 5k in exactly 30 minutes and on top of that I was almost walking throughout!! My treadmill has a maximum of 10km per hour. I set it up at the max and I still wasn't running!! That means that very soon I will have to either buy a larger machine (which I have no space for!) or run at the gym (but there it is only for 10min at a time due to queues) or venture outside (no way!!!) to *actually* RUN! Lol. In Week 1 day 1 I was walking at 3km/hour and I was running at 5!!! I cannot believe how far I've come!

This weekend I bought the three books from the Hairy Dieters after reading a post from kk679 and the encouragements by Elissy. I have had a look at them yesterday and I am really liking their approach. I think this will really help me because before that I bought "I quit Sugar books" by Sarah Wilson and these are just full of things I cannot even spell the name of! I cannot believe I bought a 375-page book that is called "Simplicious" where almost every single recipe is so hard to make unless you are chained to your kitchen table all day (since the day before! as many of her recipes need "par-cooked" vegetables which you will have made ages ago). Anyway, Hairy dieters book only use things I mostly have or easy to find from what I have seen and I think I am really going to like trying this out.

Here to another week hopefully with a better result next week!

It may be due to something as simple as too much salt, not enough fluids, too many fluids or even a bunged up digestive system. I hope you can figure it out. But, hey, at least you had a loss!

Also WELL DONE on the running, that is a massive achievement and very encouraging to me as that is my dream (when I am carrying less weight)!

I was often thirsty these days especially those days where I cycled in the morning then off to work or else where I have no time to fill my bottle back up! Interesting.... I think I will look into upping my water intake to help thank you very much!

You post is really interesting, and it's made me think a bit. You have noticed that you weighed more on Monday morning than you did on Friday morning, and that's a consistent trend for the past 3 weeks, hence I can understand why you feel frustrated about it. I often find the same pattern, in that my weight on Friday is better than Monday's weight. As I weigh myself daily, I decided to try the formula suggested by the programme 'Trust me, I'm a Doctor!' where they recommend taking your daily weights and then dividing by the days in the week to get the average weight over that time.

I've had to convert my weight to pounds though to enable me to work this out, as Maths isn't my strong point:

I'm going to illustrate it for the whole week, just incase people are interested:

Monday 13 stone 1.8 pounds = 183.8 pounds

Tuesday 13 stone 0.6 pounds = 182.6 pounds

Wednesday 12 stone 13.6 pounds = 181.6 pounds.

Thursday 13 stone 0.8 pounds = 182.8 pounds.

Friday 13 stone 0.8 pounds = 182.8 pounds.

Saturday 13 stone 1.8 pounds = 183.8 pounds.

Sunday 13 stone 1.8 pounds = 183.8 pounds.

Monday 13 stone 2.2 pounds = 184.2 pounds.

Therefore, taking the usual weight loss deduction of last Monday's weight (13 stone 1.8 pounds from today's weight of 13 stone 2.2 pounds, I've reported a weight gain of 0.4 pound)

However, if I were to add up Tuesday to Monday's weight and divide by 7, that would make 183.1 pounds as the average weight, and therefore deducting that amount from last Monday's weight, makes a loss of 0.7 pound - hence I've actually lost an average weight over the week of half a pound, rather than the small gain of 0.4 pound that I've actually reported.

I'm wondering whether to repeat this process next week just to see what the comparison would be.

I'll stick with today's amount of 0.4 pound gained, until I make a decision on that, but it's interesting to see how much more motivating that example was - and how I could feel better knowing I'd made half a pound progress as opposed to gaining 0.4 pound. I was ok about today, as I know I've made some reductions in my inches - but having the extra knowledge that I have made some progress weight wise is good.

I hope you don't think I've been selfish to use up most of my reply to you with an example of my own weight, but I'm actually wondering whether you have taken your weights for the entire week, and whether you could do a similar exercise to see what difference it would make to your results? You might want to change how you do things - as long as an approach is consistent it can show trends and changes, but this latter approach could be more reliable and descriptive and more meaningful. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts, and also anyone else who is reading through this discussion.

You have clearly had an excellent week Nussaybah, and so I would like to Congratulate you on that, and say that whilst I Congratulate you on your 0.6 pound loss, I suspect you have lost more on average - so be proud of yourself.

You have achieved 339 active minutes of exercise and done an excellent personal best of 30 minutes for a 5k - that is amazing!!!! Really well done.

It was also interesting to hear your thoughts about the Hairy Dieter's recipe books. I definitely like their books, as I do have a couple, but not the specific dieting books, just their normal books with recipes - I do like them, so I think I'll have a look at the ones you mention - I'm hoping they might have them in the library, as that's where I get quite a few of my recipe books from - the library is such a great resource and often has really up to date books as well as older classics.

I have also noticed that some recipe writers are tending to use ingredients which are really difficult and expensive to source, and that really does mean the recipe is too challenging to make for the majority of us mere mortals who want something that is quick and relatively inexpensive to prepare.

I hope you don't mind this excessively long reply, but I really enjoyed reading your post, and it got me thinking.

This is very interesting indeed. I wish I were weighing myself every day but I don't. I only do Mondays consistently and I just try once or twice during the weekend to see in which direction I am going. And the past three weeks direction was good on Fridays but Monday was a disappointement!! Also on the odd days I weigh myself I do not keep a record on MFP. But after reading your post I will try to weigh myself every morning and log it too to make the average next Monday and see how it compares with last Monday. Great tip.

I have also watched the first episode of Trust Me Im a Doctor on your recommendation but I have to admit I found it really hard to watch. Very interesting but the way they have put it all together was just too frustrating. They were cutting right in the middle of an experiment to make us wait for the result, which would not be that bad if when the time for the result came they were not *repeating the same thing ALL OVER AGAIN* BEFORE giving us the results. I had the impression they were assuming about us that we have the attention span of a gnat. I was getting really frustrated. They claim to be cutting through the hype but they were those creating hype over their documentary! It seriously aggravated me lol so I decided I will still watch the other 3 but just the last 2 minutes where they recap the results. LOL. SO I have not seen the one where they suggested averaging the weights. Worth a try, definitely!

Today I made two recipes from the hairy dieters books and I really enjoyed it so it looks like I am onto a keeper. Sarah Wilson's books are going back to Amazon for someone else to enjoy the headache.

My first clue was when you encouraged me by averaging my loss over TWO weeks, which you could only have done by re-reading my previous posts on the Monday weigh in thread. So I said to myself "who on earth would take the time to do that unless they were paid to do it?" LOL. Then there was how you always re-use something the person has said to send a personal message, and how you do that for everyone. I was like "impossible". But then going through your history I read the messages when you were weighing alone asking people to join you, then it became "join us", etc and I was like "if she's an undercover mod she really went through a lot of trouble to do it". HAHAHA!! I'm laughing in front my screen because now I do realise you are only a volunteer, but it just makes me laugh how my imagination went wild about you!

Sorry that you're puzzled by your weight loss this week, btw, so am I, do you definitely mean 0.6lbs, or 0.6kgs? I'd better get this right, because we don't want to diddle you :) A lot of people have expressed similar dismay that their monday weigh-in is higher than their friday weigh-in. I think it would be a good idea to check everything that you ate, or drank and really have a think about whether there was anything that you failed to keep tabs on, that may have surreptitiously found it's way into your mouth ;) You also mention that you were always under your calorie allowance, maybe your body's rebelling against that and wants you to eat your proper allowance, especially with your massively increased exercise routine.

Anyway, enjoy experimenting with the hairy dieters and have a great week :)

You might be onto something there...I went slightly under the lower end of my calorie allowance and it had been working, but the last couple of weeks I was more or less stuck (ha, moreless sorry I nearly stole your name there!). I had a take away and meal out this past week and lost 2 pounds this morning - go figure! There were elements like that month long germ lingering around and more painkillers which I have now managed to reduce a bit, so maybe they contributed, but perhaps your body might need a slight gee up with a few more calories to kick start it? Just a maybe. Some folk say it helps them to do that. All in all, it sounds like you had a fab, very positive and healthy week so very well done Nussybah!

Yes I agree with you and with what Weight Warrior says. There might be a case of me underestimating and/or logging wrong info onto My Fitness Pal as sometimes I make a judgement call about what food is closest and I might get these wrong....

I have also eaten a little bit more today as tomorrow I will go to the swimming pool for one hour :).

Hoping I will nail this down!

Hi again Nussaybah,

I told my husband about the averaging idea regarding weight, and he pointed out that I would need to compare 'like with like' whereby I would need to average the previous week's weight, and then the current week's weight, and then I could compare the 2 resulting figures, but he said the calculation I had understaken was meaningless as I was comparing an average reading with a previous amount that was not an average, hence that comparison is not meaningful.

Therefore, I took the average of my previous week's weight, by adding up each daily weight in pounds from Monday through to Sunday inclusive and divided it by 7 days, which was 184.2 pounds, and did the same with last week's weights (again Monday through to Sunday inclusive), which produced an average of 183.1 pounds, and therefore showed I had lost 1.1 pounds. However, I am going to continue to go by my actual weight on the scales on Mondays, as I know that the overall trend will be the same as if I averaged the weekly weights, and I'd rather not have the extra work of doing those calculations. Hence I am accepting my gain on the scales, but hoping that the average trend will be reflected in next week's results on the scales. I hope this makes sense, as I am probably not explaining it very well.

I know you were going to try averaging your weight loss this week, but you'd have to continue it for another week for it to make sense, as you'd need to compare like with like, to have a meaningful result, so I thought I'd better make you aware of that now.

I do hope I haven't confused you by this.

Thanks. You haven't confused me at all, in the end that's what I thought we would have to do eventually because comes Monday and I have my average, what would I have compared it with in fact? As that would be my average weight for the week 1Feb-7Feb only. Therefore, to have something to compare it with I would need to know my average weight for 8Feb -15feb.

So far I have noticed a 100g loss per day. Not holding my breath lol but I will go on for the initial two weeks and see where it leads me in terms of results. Thank you still for bringing this tip to my attention and I agree with you on the fact that it is trends that matter the most.

I expected a gain this week, and even by Saturday morning I'd gained 2lbs. After Chinese takeaway Friday and 7 choc bars during the week, plus a lot of sugar Frosties and other stuff... (I did throw the rest of the Frosties in the bin), somehow I have gone from 11st 4.6 to 11st 3.8! Maybe being extra good over the weekend made the difference. I am grateful for this 0.8 lb loss.

In my head there are four wagons travelling down a road (not literally!)

On the first are those who are sticking to their healthy eating plan and are losing weight or maintaining. I fell off that and landed on the third one where, I think, those of us who go off plan and gain weight travel temporarily. I stayed on there for several days until Saturday when I clawed my way onto the second wagon (in my head this is for us who are getting back on plan and trying to lose the weight gained). Once the extra gain is lost and I'm back on track (which I am now) then it's back onto the first wagon. The road gets slimmer and healthier as we go along together.

The fourth wagon? That's for those who give up, it's going in the opposite direction towards ill health, possible depression and everything else that comes with being an unhealthy eater. I vow now that I will never get on that wagon again.

Am I a bit nuts, maybe... But the image of us on this journey, together with the host of supportive and understanding comments on this forum is very encouraging and we will do it. OK, that's me done, onwards and downwards.

Well done for stepping away from the Frosties - sugary foods can fuel cravings and can be really hard to put down once they take hold of you, so well done for escaping that trap in the end, and breaking free. Brilliant to hear that you had a good remainder of the weekend. :-)

You have an interesting idea with regard to the 4 wagons along the road, and your mobility between them is to be applauded, as it sounds dangerous to me to jump from one to another - next time, please ask them to slow down, so you can pass safely and avoid potential injury - unless you love to live dangerously, in which case - make sure you wear some protective gear!

Sorry, I'm getting into the flow of the scene you have painted, and enjoying the creativeness of it. I like the way you think, and the scene you're portraying for us. Just having a name like 'Anon-E-Mouse' suggests a creative mind to me. :-)

I do feel sorry to hear that the 4th wagon is actually going in the other direction though, as I'd like to think those people are safely esconsed with us on the Monday group Wagon - and that we're enabling them to feel healthier and get better bit by bit. We don't have that unhealthy wagon here - our Wagon is bright and colourful, and has rehab areas - so that healthy and unhealthy folk can enjoy interacting and learning from each other to work together on changing habits for the better, and achieving a healthier lifestyle.

You are definitely not nuts Anon-E-Mouse - you sound very creative and thoughtful, and I appreciate you sharing that concept of the 4 wagons - and also letting us know where you're at currently with that.

If we spot any 4th wagons though, or anyone who appears to be riding that wagon, then let's endeavour to gently stop them, see if the people on board would like to recuperate in our brightly coloured Monday group weigh-in Wagon, and invite them enjoy the journey alongside us. Hopefully we're all on the road to good health and happiness, and to achieve the best that we can achieve in terms of our goals.

Hi Suzybenj, wagon two is very much better than three (and hugely better than four, please don't ever get on that one). I suspect that, as we are all human and subject to temptation, most of us will travel on two or three at some point, probably several times, certainly I have and it's only week 7 for me! Reading posts and replies on this forum, there's lot of folk on your wagon ... as someone else on here said - have some fun on the way! 😀

Good afternoon all,

Despite trying very hard I have stayed the same this week at 10 stones and 10 pounds so am feeling slightly miffed. The sensible part of my brain tells me it's probably just hormones/bloating etc., but the irrational part of my brain is saying aaarrrrggghhhh!!!

Oh well, rant over. Will try for another 2lbs next week.

I hope you feel better for letting that out! I am sure you are frustrated at being stuck at the 10's - but as I am sure you would predict I am going to say that maintaining is still better than gaining, so I do hope you won't let it get you down too much. :-)

You're right, it may be down to hormones/bloating, and hopefully it will start to shift again soon.

Are you doing the NHS 12 week plan - it's definitely worth a look if you've not seen it. Using an app alongside it really helps with keeping track of the food and drink intake - and Myfitnesspal is a good app as it's free and easy to use.

Totally gutted as i've gained 2lbs this week- not only have i been ill and was a bit relaxed with eating (nibbling to stop nausea-well thats how i justified it lol) but now i've got totm... its not fair!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(foot stomping tantrum) I had no idea it was coming but at least i can justify a few psychotic episodes of madness over the last few days along with lots of unexplained tears... but 2lbs??? Maybe my evil argos scales have totm too?- i always suspected they didnt like me- i cant put my finger on it but its the way they look at me sometimes- kind of slitty-eyed and smug all at the same time- i knew i should've bought the john lewis smiley ones but i'm such a tight ar$3 its my own fault now i'm left with cheap scales with a vendetta (I just hope i dont wake up one morning and theres a head of lettuce in my bed)

Your post has really made me laugh - it is so funny to think of the vendetta between you and your scales, and the thought of the scales having a totm alongside you. Too many hormones in that house I think! :-)

My commiserations with you that you've gained 2 pounds, and I can understand you're feeling frustrated about that. But try not to be too hard on yourself, you have been ill and you do have your totm, so you have a lot to contend with - and that's without the vendetta from the Scales.

Hopefully the next week will be much better - and you will have a good result to report back next week. Wishing you well and hope you are feeling better to face the week ahead.

I'm just going to search for how to "off scales" but i suspect its the same as for people ie lime, concrete and a deep lake or a patio i just have a niggling feeling they're the kind of scales that would electrocute you if you tried to remove the battery so it might be best if i start making discreet plans now... i'll keep you posted

I laughed so much I had to change my tenna lady!

Today I weigh 10st 5.4lbs. Thats a loss of l.10lbs since Thursday so I am very pleased with that. After doing a bit of research on this site I have decided to go with the pledge route one day at a time so my pledge which will last until its second nature to me is

a) No sweet treats in Coffee Shops or restaurants

B) Gym 3 times a week at least

C) hour walk at least 2times a week as well.

Did not eat midday as was soo full from breakfast but still managed to gain. Back to it this week once I've caught up with all the fanily's washing and house work,

I can feel firmness underneath the flubber now, which wasn't there before, so that's a novelty :) Actually, I'm glad to maintain this week, I thought I was going to gain! Although, there's no reason why I should have, except that I think last week's large loss was a blip and I'm making up for it now :)

You're not far off 10K's a day. Have you decided whether you're going to do the run, or not?

Good evening everyone

Hope you have had a good week. I have been ill since Friday so sadly missed my Wk 4 run 3 on Friday and spent the weekend feeling sorry for myself and feeding my woman flu.

Consequently I have gained 0.5lb tonight 😣surprised it wasn't more to be honest as I have been going for it with the comfort food!!

Been for my delayed run tonight and off to make spicy parsnip soup for this weeks lunches at work.

Next hurdle is my sister's hen weekend away this weekend but will try to keep the damage to a minimum. We all know what we need to do but sometimes life just gets in the way I guess.

Why aren't you happy Trebor? You had to forego 3,500 calories for that pound! I would say that was a phenomenal achievement and you should be celebrating! In fact, where are the fireworks? :)

It's important to have realistic expectations and to enjoy your journey, or you're going to find this a hard slog. Come on! You've done a magnificent job and I for one think you're a star! :)

Well kids, I lost a whopping 6oz. this week. Also on the plus side the cravings are manageable, so there is hope.I have also just started exercising. I think this is when you could get desperate if you allow yourself to. Still fighting the good fight.

Hi vintage-me - take the half a pound loss---they all add up in the end. Try to balance healthy eating with a wee something you like---but keep it all under control - check out Anon-e- mouse reply few posts up - she has a great wagon theory - think you are in number 2 (like me)

Hi Lowcal :-) good evening to you and well done not gaining anything more than 0.4 pounds this week after a large Sunday lunch as part of the birthday celebrations, sounds like you enjoyed your time with the family as well as the food so I say, "it's aloud" I worry sometimes when I face a situation like that and think will this effect my weigh in or should I just live a little bit outside the box and the answer I always come back with is "yes" life is for living, enjoying and celebrating and I know you have no regrets and nor should you hun. Your already at a healthy weight which is just fab so the occasional treat isn't going to make or break you :-) I do however still want to see you reach your personal goal.

I'm so pleased to hear that your measurements have decreased from the last time you took them and it is always good to remember that even if the scales do not show the results you would like to see the tape measure can be just as rewarding, so I'm really pleased for you :-) YEAH!

It's nice to know that you are introducing more weights and strength exercise into your routine. I am also embarking on this new venture a lot more seriously from this day forward, as I need to build more muscle and sculpt my shape to exactly the way I want it to look. Ruth is also concentrating on this starting today so that makes 3 of us :-)

I have a multi gym at home so I can concentrate on lifting weights in sets of 8 x by 5 and work on different muscle groups, also I am doing squats, press-up, I managed 3 sets of 10 today for the first time and in between sets I jump rope and star jump and then follow this up with the plank. I feel I am going to make a major difference now that I have had time to re-think my strategy and Ruth's recent post really hit home with me and I'm sure that you will start to see even more inches disappear very soon.

Now for me I have maintained my weight this week and am 10 st 10 lbs and I would love to be 10/7 by my wedding day so I am looking to hopefully lose 3 lbs in the next two weeks. It seems to get harder the less you weigh to lose weight so I think and hope that setting this new challenge with the strength and weights may just get me to where I would like to be by the big day.

The groups weight loss is just brilliant and everyone should be so very proud :-) I would like to wish you a great week ahead Lowcal and good luck in getting those 2 pounds shifted this week, I'm hoping to do the same :-)

Evening all

Unfortunately this week I have gone from 12st 6.5lb to 12st 8lb, a gain of 1.5lb!! 😞. It all started to go wrong on Monday when I ate not one but two doughnuts! It was downhill from there and I seemed to just eat whatever I fancied, never a good idea! No amount of exercise has been able to make up for the extra rubbish food consumed!

Goal for the coming week, keep up the exercise as I know it will pay off and eat better (bit of a no brainer really) 😀, aiming for a 2lb loss by next Monday.

Oh dear Nic, it seems as if doughnuts have the upper hand this week, as you're not the first to have succombed to their sweet call :)

Never mind, it's in the past and you can move past this incident and jump right back on the wagon :)

Just get back on plan and keep up with the exercise and that gain will be reduced to a loss :)

PS Don't forget to give Lizzy your K's for sunday, so she can complete the weekly stats :)

Hi everyone

Nearly forgot to post this week.

Last week was challenging on the eating front, found myself nibbling on on too many sweet temptations. Part of me thinks that I am trying to sabotage myself.

I've come too far to give up at this late stage in the plan. But it could have been worse.

25th January 2015: Weight: 10st 5.25lbs

1st February 2015: Weight: 10st 5.5lbs

So that's a gain of 0.25lbs and count myself lucky as I was expecting more.

So more cardio and extra strength exercise this week and keep myself occupied and stop my hands from straying to the sweetie jar.

I've been in touch with Candystripe, who is one of our ex-Fab 5'ers, and I know many of you know her and will have wondered where she is, anyway, here is an update on Candystripe:

"Congratulations to Candystripe on losing 6.8 pounds this week, and to being 12 stone 5.4 pounds currently. She's now only 5 pounds short of her lowest weight of 12 stone 0.4 pounds, and she's feeling understandably happy about this. I am posting this result on Candystripe's behalf, but she will be back in the thread again very soon. She is fine, but has been extremely busy this week with family commitments, and her lovely hubby is due to have his operation on Thursday, so we will be thinking of you Candystripe, and wishing your husband well."

Hi HappyMary,

I know you're gained half a pound in week 2 - so maybe double check your food and drink intake on an app like Myfitnesspal to make sure you're not getting any 'extras' that you don't realise - even sauces or spreads can be more calorific than we realise.

It could of course purely be down to fluid retention, perhaps as a result of a salty meal or hormonal influences, so don't worry too much - if you keep on track, you'll hopefully see a better result next week. The important thing is to keep motivated.

Hello Fab 5 and all you lovely peeps. Better late than never, weighed but forgot to check in with you. Last week I weighed 16.12.4, yesterday I was 16.10.4. I'm a bit disappointed because mid-week the scales said I'd got down to 16.8, but I did go out for a meal on Saturday night, then Sunday lunch with the in-laws on Sunday. I did try to make healthy choices on Saturday (salad starter, liver and veg rather than pasta in a creamy sauce or pizza), but I did succumb to a couple of drinks. Walked there and back though (15-20 mins each way). Great news on your inch loss Lowcal - I sometimes think that's almost better than the pounds coming off, because the difference is so tangible in your clothes.
