I nearly didn't open the envelope that arrived today, thinking it was junk mail. And then I read it 3 times because I couldn't believe what I was seeing. My neurologist -- the ONLY doctor (other than my GP) to take my complaints seriously after FORTY-FIVE YEARS -- is leaving the practice. And then I sat down and cried, because you know, it's all about me. How could he do this to me? He's wonderful! I adore him. He's been written up in our local paper because of his knack at finding diagnoses that slip by every other doctor. I just saw him a couple weeks ago, and he didn't say a thing about leaving.
I sent a quick message to him that he'll be missed and that I hope he'll change his mind or at the very least open a private practice. His response? His wife is seriously ill, and he needs to be at home to take care of her.
And then I cried for their family. Nothing like putting my minor MS problems in their proper place. Please send prayers for this good doctor and the wife whom he loves.

That letter is not something anyone ever wants to get but it’s sometimes unavoidable, NorasMom . Could you ask for recommendations from him? I know that MSAA has a database of neurologists by region. You need to request access to it. That might aid in your search. Good luck!
Thank you for that, but I'm going to ride it out. It's a large practice with other professionals; they're just not him! My MS is actually pretty stable right now, so with any luck I'll just need occasional monitoring. I'm hoping that he can return at some point.
so sorry we do loose the good ones ...yes he needs to be there for his wife but they never find another doctor as the one that has had to leave ...hope you find another great one again...many prayers for you to help deal with all of this and for the doctor and his family ....love and happiness...
Prayers going up. The neuro I found when I moved here almost 5 years ago was great. She switched to the other big medical system a couple years ago so I got a new doctor. I am very impressed with him. He is very thorough with his neuro exam and spends a lot of time at each visit making sure all of my questions are answered.Hoping you get an excellent replacement!
I know how you feel My MS dr had been with me from day 1 of my DX. At that point it was I6yrs. I received a letter also about 6 yrs ago that she was going on medical leave. She then 2 years later passed away. She was the kind of doctor that always said ( You know your body I dont so you tell me what you want or need) I have been with her replacemnt since but I do not feel like she is a people person. I go the the Mellen Center of Cleveland Clinic here in Oh There are numerous DR there I can choose from but I will stick to her replacemnt due to her nurse PR actioner who has been with my first dr and knows me.
And who knows, you may love a fresh set of eyes on you and a new set of ideas on your case. Prayers for your favorite doctor and his wife/family. I think God must have a plan for occurrences such as this-
That is one very valid excuse. Does he have a recommendation who you can see instead? Perhaps his office knows and can let you know. Definitely praying for him and his family.
Norasmom, I am sorry. For you and for your doctor's family. Sounds like it is out of your hands, and also out of your doctor's hands. Here in the rural South, good doctors are few and far between. (far, far between). I pray that you can find a talented, gifted doctor, and I will pray for the retiring doctor and his family. Blessings to all of you!
my neurologist also, has left, she is very ill. i sobbed too. i think about her all the time... have finally after months made an appt to see someone else but she will always be the one i remember.

another neurologist she worked with many years ago died of a sudden heart attack, and i did manage to survive, of course.
sometimes i don't even think of my own mother who's been gone since 1997 every day any more. i think if we really kept these promises to ourselves we'd go crazy.
Anyway, you are not alone, and they are only human. Wait a bit to grieve then find yourself another neurologist.
