I have been prescribed betamethasone valerate and apply it several times a week. I cannot get the bottom of what causes it and my GP is not interested. can anyone help? Should i be taking the steroid long term?

I have been suffering from an itchy scalp which produces dry flaky skin and a red rash, for around five years now.
As always, ask for a referral to Dermatology. They can address the cause and medicate as appropriate. I use DiproSalic scalp application. It does contain betamethasone but also Salasilic Acid which can be very comforting to distressed skin. When applied I can almost hear my scalp go.....aaaaaah! and instantly cool and itch free. Do push for a referral to Dermatology as my solution may not work for you and they know all things skin!

How many disinterested GPs are there?!!!! It is very dispiriting. Toomany GPs do not refer skin problems early enough. Good luck with getting dermatology referral and a better solution.
Archi-landschap I am sorry to hear of your problem.
I was prescribed a Betamethasone Mousse, by a disinterested Dermatologist, which made me itch more than ever. I was allergic to one of the ingredients.
I saw a different Dermatologist and was prescribed Synalar gel, which cleared the problem.
From what I have learned from the Dermatologists, it doesn't matter how much cream or gel you use, it is the oral steroids that cause the problems. I have a 'very potent' steroid cream for my skin problems and the Dermatologists tell me to 'slosh' it on!
Incidentally, what do you wash your hair with? Could that be causing the problem, or at least, exacerbating it?
