Hi all. I have recently been researching the link between Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and OCD. From what I have researched, it seems that individuals with OCD have been shown to have low levels of BDNF. This has me wondering if BDNF supplementation could help with OCD symptoms? I'm curious if anyone has researched this and/or has found BDNF or other types of supplements helpful in their OCD recovery.
*note - I am not a psychiatrist or doctor, I am not trying to make any recommendations about this, I'm just curious what other peoples' experiences are*

That's interesting! I can't believe I've never even heard of that when I feel like I'm constantly researching ocd. I'm going to do some research on it now haha. I also found out last night about something called inositol which is apparently really good for anxiety and ocd.
I've also done a bit of reading up on inositol. Apparently it can be bought over the counter in health food shops and chemists and is safe to take. The daily dose for OCD is quite high but studies have found it can help with really intransigent OCD that isn't touched by antidepressants etc. Here's a piece from a reputable organization (the hosts of this forum):
That sounds very interesting to me. I will research it from my side as well. The only supplement that I have feedback for is SAMe. A friend of mine doesn't take antidepressants- just SAMe and she said it is a lifesaver for her. I don't think you can take both antidepressants and SAMe. I've personally tried HTP-5 and I have horrible effects from it.
That's not something I've heard of, but thanks for raising it. I shall do a bit of research. I'm happy to share info on anything I turn up.
Interesting purpulpenguins I have had OCD for many years not diagnosed until 40's, got to tell you I was a mess. I started on 20mg fluoxetine, over months I was increased to 80mg. and there I stuck till this day. OCD was just OCD back then. But the concept has grown enhanced breakaway theories and new discoveries in mental health. Medication has also moved forward. I think there was choice 3 perhaps 4 alternative's medications at this time. which ever best had the least side effects. These were known as ssri Special Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. At the time I thought or lead to believe it would help my OCD and I guess it did while I believed it. But the fact is that it only treated the anxiety, low self esteem, the depression. However this was a great start with CBT. Medication is not a miracle cure it goes in hand with therapy so they say. Just remember what ever you are prescribed and I'm sure it will benefit you, there will be some side effects and the long you continue on high dosages remember to take this into consideration. So what is the true answer to OCD recovery if at all? Personally speaking from experience only. Time and purpose. Find the time to understand what you are dealing with. Educate yourself. Use time to find a purpose set your self goals small to start with. Always good to set a goal that helps others. What ever destiny or choices you make make sure you absolutely positive it is right for you. Ask questions to your therapists don't be afraid to challenge them its your body. Gain knowledge ask others opinions because going backwards in time is just as painful as the first.please.
