Best Residential Care for OCD

Hi - I'm the mom of an 18 year old daughter who was diagnosed with OCD at 13. She as done intensive outpatient ERP but needs further treatment and wants to do Residential Care. From what I know/have read, Rogers and McLean are the top 2 residential care programs for OCD. I'd love any input or recommendations on these two programs or input good or bad - not sure if one is better than the other specifically in relation to contamination OCD?

Thank you for any input - Catx

I believe the only residential OCD program that Rogers has is in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.

I was asking causing sometimes smaller or greater proximity to parents is healthier or not, just depending...

Regardless, Rogers and McLean are both excellent! And they both take insurance which is a huge help. The Houston OCD Program and NBI Ranch are also great options but are both currently private pay.

I personally was at the OCDI at McLean in 2010. I would suggest either the OCDI in Boston or the original Rogers in Wisconsin. Both are excellent options. And feel it out, see what she responds to. They both do the exact same treatment but the residential portions as well as some of the rules are very different.

Of you'd like to email me offsite for more insight, feel free:

Hi Catx.....my daughter was diagnosed at age 3. She is now 20 years old and doing well, solely because she was treated at the OCDI at McLean. They literally saved her life....They are known to have the best treatment providers in the world. Not only are they the best at what they do, they are the most caring individuals I have ever met. They are located in Belmont Massachusetts. People from all over the world go there to get better. I wish you and your daughter well, I know if she is able to get in, she will greatly benefit.

I have heard good & bad about Rogers. My daughter did intensive outpatient at Rogers in Tampa. It didn't work. She just did 7 weeks residential at McLean. Totally transformational!!! She is a new person and has her life back at 24. We had tried everything. HIGHLY recommend McLean!!!!!

So good to hear this. My now 19 year old son was at Rogers residential for 6 weeks last fall and he was not successful there. He is currently at McLean residential. He's only been there 2 1/2 weeks, but I am hopeful it will work this time. They seem to run their programs differently as far as the expectations for continuing care. So far, I feel like the McLean team is caring and invested in helping my son get his life back. We did not feel the same concern at Rogers. I've seen the daily schedule at McLean and they seem very organized and they have many different individual topic groups such as "intrusive thoughts", "perfectionism", "bathroom habits", "hoarding", "social skills", "health anxiety", "culinary skills", "scrupulosity", "habit reversal", "BDD", and other topic groups. Patients are assigned to the groups that they need based on their individual OCD topics. There are many other groups that all patients attend. I mention above the optional groups. They have leisure skills outings available 4 days of the week, which I think is important for people who have been trapped in their homes by their OCD. I believe that Rogers and McLean are both good programs, but I feel much more comfortable with our family therapist at McLean. I'd love to hear feedback from others regarding residential programs.

Thank you for this valuable information, having no idea really of the programs available and wha they are like your detailed description is helpful. agree, when your child has had no life it is great to see leisure outings on the agenda, and I believe they would be helpful in helping overcome OCD. Thanks for sharing, I pray that your son returns to you having regained his freedom from OCD! Please let me know I'd love to celebrate success of another OCD jailbreak -- I've heard many people share their stories of success so I know it is possible!

My son is still at McLean. End of 7 weeks today. He is struggling, but is still there. I feel very good about the staff at McLean. He has had about 12 TMS sessions. The family therapist we are working with is very good and it seems the whole team are doing everything possible to help my son.

Hi MomofOCD - would love to hear that your daughter is still doing well after McLean treatment? We are on waiting list and it is excruciating to see my daughter suffering while we wait. Would love to rejoice vicariously through you and your daughter while we wait for our victory over OCD....

Hi Catx!

Wishing the best for your daughter! Fellow OCD sufferer here who is also interested in getting treatment at McLean. I am wondering - how long is the wait list? Have they given you a time of how long you'll have to wait?

Love, Bao

Catx profile image
Catx in reply to bao1

Hi Bao1-- The wait list for McLean was 3 months and about the same for Rogers. We are on wait list for both as back-up plan, but my daughter will be going to Houston OCD House in January 2020 to try that program, which is a bit more boutique (i.e., it is a 6000 sq ft,. home setting, less hospital like) -- (anyone on this board have recommendations for it??) Should that not give her the help she needs hopefully she will be up on the wait list and can choose McLean or Rogers for more treatment. Have you heard of the 4-day Bergen Treatment? They are wrapping up research this month and taking it public in 2020. Sadly you must live in Houston to do it (FYI TO any Houstonians suffering OCD) - although they do plan to train and offer it more broadly that is likely to take some time. Just telling you in case you want to check that out and live in or would relocate to Houston. All the best to you in your courageous battle !!

Hi from Europe, Finland! I saw in this discussion the mentioning "the 4-day Bergen Treatment". Bergen is located in Norway (another Nordic country), but even though I live in Finland I'm not well aware of the results of this method. BUT interesting when you in the USA talk about this...

Houston OCD does not take insurance, do they? We ruled it out for that reason. My son definitely gained insight from his stay at McLean. He is unfortunately really struggling after his return home on November 15. I would send him back to McLean if I thought he might be ready to really stop his rituals. He had 24 sessions of TMS while he was there. He thinks it helped him somewhat. He got a lot more from McLean than he did at Rogers. He spent 9.5 weeks at McLean. We found them to be caring and encouraging. Did not get that feeling at Rogers. The facility at Rogers was very

nice, but felt the treatment team was uncaring about us as a family. Did not feel the love there that we did at McLean. My thought is to take the first spot available and hope for the best. The key is whether your daughter is ready to accept the help and is ready to do the hard work to stop doing her rituals. My son is unfortunately not there yet. The recommendation when my son left McLean was that he move out of our home into a group home or similar type of housing. He wanted to come home. But we are in the process of trying to find him somewhere to go. He is now willing to live somewhere else. He realizes that with his dad and me as his biggest triggers, it is not a good situation. He will be 20 in February.

Still hopeful that once he is out of our home he will start to get better. Good luck to your daughter wherever she lands. Many of the patients in both Rogers and McLean had done other residential programs. Don't give up if the first one doesn't work.

Thanks for that insight they (Houston OCD House) does not take insurance but I was thinking that I would file it myself and still get the reimbursement, my husband handling that I will have to confirm with him as I would not want to take that bill on 100%.

I'm sorry your son still struggling, and yes thank you I am trying to help myself remember she may need additional treatment programs afterward, and keep my hopes high but my expectations low ( if that makes sense).

What are TMS Sessions?

NovaOllie profile image
NovaOllie in reply to Catx

Transcranial magnetic stimulation. BrainWays is the OCD head coil that is the only one approved by the FDA. It is a different machine than what is used for depression.

Lexapro for OCD? My 18 year old daughter has not wanted to take medication for OCD (she doesn't share with me why). At this stage she has dropped of her last year of high school (though she is extremely intelligent) and is home bound. Even when home there are many enjoyable things OCD says she "can't do". She decided to get a prescription for medication in case she ever does decide to try it - I was surprised the the doctor prescribed Lexapro - only because all I know about OCD meds when you google as it doesn't appear to be one of the top 4. Just wondering if Lexapro is working for anyone else with OCD and any insight as to why a doctor might start her with Lexapro (that is described as "a potential but little studied treatment for OCD") as opposed to Zoloft, Paxil.

I am so happy to be reporting back to this group from the other side of the OCD tunnel. This has been a long, excruciatingly painful journey. My daughter was diagnosed with OCD at 13, it became so severe over the years that 6 months ago, in August 2019, she became house bound. She could not leave the house, nor could she even do homeschool from home as she "couldn't" touch her computer. She also could not do other fun things like read books, turn on the TV etc. She was literally paralyzed with OCD. She allowed herself to go to the bathroom only twice a day, and had "accidents" a few times that sent her crying to very long, brutal showers that took HOURS and HOURS and many bars of soap. As we were on the "wait" list for both McLean and Rogers and I couldn't bear to see her suffering, I became her arms and legs doing what OCD would not allow her to do because I just couldn't stand to see her suffer. It was exhausting. Desperate to find earlier treatment I came upon Houston OCD House and they said they could take her. We signed her up to go immediately to the Residential program for 6-8 weeks. Just before we packed her up to go I heard of a one week intensive program that Dr. Chad Brandt at Houston OCD House does, and my daughter and I had a video call with him about the program. She wanted to try it. The efficacy rates for it (based on the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale) were very promising. Last Saturday we set her up at a nearby VRBO in Houston and she started working with Dr. Brandt on Monday, her YBOCS was 37 of 40 (extremely severe). She came home with us yesterday, her YBOCS at a 3. yes THREE. My husband and I only recognized her because she looked like the daughter we used to know before OCD took hold. Instead of her long hair in a tight bun, it was loose and flowing, she was smiling, she didn't have awkward stiff body posture trying to not "touch" anything, or a stern face, expression or manner. She was FREE. She said she FEELS FREE from OCD. She came home, HUGGED ME AND HER DAD (I haven't been able to touch her for 6 months or more) got trash bags and CLEANED HER ROOM (it was a disaster - she couldn't clean it and wouldn't allow us to). She is taking all opportunities to cuddle the puppy and plans to enroll in school on MONDAY. She has been cuddling the puppy. I myself, having been released from all of the requirements of OCD, and having been given permission to be a MOM again, not an OCD assistant, am a limp noodle of relief. If this sounds like a made up story I can assure you I would've have thought EXACTLY the same thing. I promise you, this is a real story and I'm happy to answer any questions any of you may have if you would like my personal phone number I will private message you. #YouCANBeFreeofOCD #Believe!

My daughter 26yo) was scheduled to start residential care at McLean and then COVID hit and we are back on a wait list and they won't give us any indication of a possible admission date. We are getting desperate because my daughter is on our insurance under COBRA which is going to expire in about 6 months. We reached out to Rogers and they are willing to take her sooner but I've heard McLean is better of the two. Please tell me more about Houston. Did your daughter do the one week session and gain that much improvement? My daughter is willing to go into residential treatment but she is not very motivated to do ERP with her local therapist. Was your daughter treatment resistent before Houston?

Thanks for any insight.

Hi Catx, I hope your daughter is still doing well. I’m just curious, did your daughter do well at Houston without meds or with lexapro? I’m wondering if any of these facilities will help without medication? Also, are you saying she was specifically helped by Dr Chad Brandt? From what I’m reading he doesn’t serve my state, does that mean we would go to Houston and stay somewhere nearby? I’m going to email him, just curious if you can provide some information. You can private message me too if you like.

Four years ago I became a member of this site in desperation to help my then teen daughter get the "right" help/treatment for Contamination OCD. Today I'm happy to report that she is healthy, happy and free from being a prisoner of OCD, wrapping up her last year at college as a computer science major. I no longer come to this site but was reminded of it when I got an alert/message yesterday from a mom inquiring, so I wanted to post a last post to say if you are looking to help your loved one, or yourself, I'm very happy to tell ANYONE suffering from OCD the details of my daughter's treatment and what worked for her, you can email me at cindy.cumings@icloud.com for my phone number. #BELIEVE that you can be free of OCD -- others have and YOU can too!!

Hi Catx!

Thank you for sharing your insight! I stumbled upon this while searching for help for my 18-year-old son. He is currently in an intensive outpatient 5 days a week. He was doing better but his progress has stalled the last 2 weeks. He is getting worse and depression is setting in with the unrelenting, obsessive thoughts. The current wait list for McLean is 5-6 months after the 2-3 weeks of processing admissions. That is not a feasible wait.

I called Dr. Brandt a few days ago but never heard back. Do you know if they offer this Bergen method anywhere else? Mayo Clinic offers a 5-day but only for those under 18 years old. They cited a lack of available staff for adults which is sad. Other residentials that accept ins and have availability do not specialize in OCD which will likely not be effective.

We are desperate so any information is helpful!

Thank you!

I commented in a prior post that you have to live in Houston for an intensive 4-day program style treatment like the Bergen treatment which has such amazing efficacy rates, etc. I wanted to provide an update -- it is now available to everyone across the country by Dr. Chad Brandt in what is called on his site: "Intensive Treatment for Severe OCD". You will see underneath it the 4-day Bergen program that is available only to those that live in Houston -- but this Intensive Treatment program just above it is the one my daughter did and I'm very happy to report she is still doing FANTASTIC. She beat it and you can too -- don't give up hope! drchadbrandt.com/services-1

Thanks for the positive recommendation!

I went to Boston 20 years ago for 6 weeks and it was worthless. They put me on Geodon and I felt out of it and dizzy. Then they promised to find me follow up when I got home and there was none. I would look into Rogers. I didn't have the right insurance. But it does no good to come home w/out the support you have in treatment. Make sure they line that up! Good Luck. Miss-Walker-95 Plus.

I am brand new to this site, but our daughter has been struggling with debilitating OCD. It started when she was little, runs in the family, and has increasingly gotten worse. she is now 20. We are in the process of getting her in the OCD Clinic of Houston, which is part of Mclean. The doctor you mentioned is listed as one of their doctors. Is this where your daughter went? I was encouraged by your story and would love to be on the other end of this journey. I would love to connect with you if you are open to it?

I know how painful it can be for a mom to see her child suffer :( (P.S. - the doctor I listed, Dr. Chad Brandt, that my daughter saw, is no longer at OCD Clinic of Houston though he was when she received her treatment, he now has his own practice specializing in this OCD treatment)

Seeking a place for 22 year old daughter. Deciding between different places, but OCDI Texas one of them. She also has trauma, body dysmorphia and depressed a bit. Recent dx of OCD, actually. We always treated the anxiety, so not sure if her OCD is bad enough. (We live near Boston so we know McLean). 5 month wait still. Successful college gal except she just got to exhausted and asked for residential. Her therapist was only familiar with Milestones Onsite and Claudia Black Young Adult (Meadows) but I thought were way too old mentality and too AA and detox oriented. Other one researching is APN, Honeylake, Newport Institute, SierraTucscon (got horrible reviews), and many more! It's exhausting and scary.

Anyone else have any success with the residential OCDI Texas? Thanks
